Black Mecca: The African Muslims of Harlem, is a very interesting and intimate look inside an African Muslims community. Dr. Abdullah's book welcomed me into a world within a world. It took me on a compelling journey through the lives of several individuals. I became personally connected to them while sharing their everyday blessings, shortcomings and some of their cultural traditions. In the second chapter, I found myself in a sixty-foot, single-cabin catamaran on a journey across the Atlantic with fourteen Senegalese men bound for New York. I really enjoyed reading this book and found it hard to put down once I started the journey.

Staring in the 1960’s through September 2011, the palate of the American public has been over-saturated with predominately two types of Islamic ideologies: the Nation of Islam and the Arab cultural Islam. Black Mecca, written by Dr. Zain Abdullah, gives insight into a wider, more robust pictorial of the Islamic religion. Black Mecca gives a firsthand account of present day life for both African immigrants and Afro Americans in the Harlem community. This documented account of the personal lives and behind the scenes views of their daily challenges gives the reader a preview of what will become the new Harlem community. The new Harlem renaissance will be a mixture of this multicultural, linguistic, and bicoastal dynamic outlined in the pages of this great work, Black Mecca. I advise all educators, ethnic historians, and anyone else interested in where American culture is headed to read this book.

Black Mecca gave an interesting perspective on how African Immigrant Muslims perceive America to be. The sacrifices, struggle'sand faith of the African Muslims are well documented by Dr. Abdullah. The American Dream at times was/is a nightmare. But the dream is more promising than the perception of home. The book is a great read in helping one to understand the importance of culture, traditions, faith and community of immigrant African Muslims trying to be successful in Harlem USA.

Timothy Rasinski is a professor of literacy education at Kent State University. He has written over 200 articles and has authored, co-authored or edited over 50 books or curriculum programs on reading education. He is author of the best selling book on reading fluency entitled The Fluent Reader, published by Scholastic, and co-author of the award winning fluency program called Fluency First, published by the Wright Group. Very few of the hints did not make sense, however it presents as a learning opportunity to think in a different direction than originally thought. I used this to keep my 3rd going to 4th grader sharp during the summer and am really glad I did. We did a new page 4 times a week and then I tested randomly on the words presented. We'll probably finish the workbook this summer. Once my son got the hang of thinking critically on the context clues, it became 2nd nature to him. Now when we read books together and he doesn't really recognize the word, he'll review the text around to provide me a synonym, so he can move on with the story without losing the meaning. His reading comprehension scores are leveling him at the 7th grade level while being in 4th grade. Good investment.

This is a wonderful book. My son is a poor speller. We are dedicating our Summer 2014 to improving his spelling. This book is tep 1 and boy is it fun. He has to do 2 pages every day. An example would be the word "lion". The next clue building on the word lion, is a male horse. (My 6th grader did not know this). The clue says add 4 letters to the word lion to know what a male horse is : STALlion. Get it. So he learned to spell stallion and the meaning. I think that by the time he finishes this book, he will be able to knock out crossword puzzles. Very educational and a lot of fun. The answers are in the back. Rip those pages out before leaving it with the child. :)

Love these!!!! I am using them with my 5th graders and they really look forward to "Word Ladder" day. They are an interesting mix of very easy and then very challenging words. My kids have developed their own strategies for solving using dictionaries, clues provided and working from the bottom up or top down method. I wish I had found these earlier in the year. They will definitely be a staple of next year's reading program!!

This is my second time buying from this series. We have been using the book for grades 2-3 this year for our homeschool grade 3. My son has been struggling with spelling since kindergarten and these books have definitely helped him figure that spelling is not that hard if you can see a pattern. You start with a word, such as mop and follow the clues up the "ladder" to make new words. For examples, you start with mop and then you might go to shop and then to hope and then to mope and so on.I use this coupled with Spectrum Phonics and a free spelling list from the internet for his spelling curriculum. I am very pleased with his progress and we will use this particular book next year in our fourth grade curriculum. He completes the sheets by himself in about 2 minutes unless he needs help to understand a clue. I highly recommend this series for homeschools and parents looking for extra spelling practice at home. Happy learning!!

The item we received was used (we bought it new) but flipping through the book, I find this incredibly easy for the target audience of 4-6th graders. So this review is for the content (not the condition it was delivered in). All this is like a word scramble game, and not one that is very difficult. If your child has difficulty spelling more common words, maybe you would find this book helpful. But I bought this to help boost vocabulary for my son just entering third grade and I find that it misses the mark for this as he already knows 90% or more of the content in this book. The book says the last 3 pages are the hardest in the book and the last page lists the following words: sick, pick, Rick (why a person's first name should be in a vocabulary book is beyond me!), trick, track, rack, tack, tall, wall and well. Of all the 100 ladders, I found one which had some challenging words but that was about it. So if you are looking for a challenging vocabulary workbook, this is definitely not it. But it may help with some spelling and easy definitions of common words (which some kids struggle with defining words they know). But for my purposes, this didn't come close to hitting the mark at all.

I purchased this book to boost the vocabulary skills of a couple of fourth graders I'm tutoring. These things aren't easy, and with kids whose language skills aren't great, the Word Ladders are really tough.I'm not giving up yet, but I did the first one with my fourth graders yesterday, and they were totally lost. I did read the suggestions and tried to hint without giving them the answers, but it was a pretty frustrating experience for all of us. I'm not sure I'm going to continue with this book. For kids with a limited vocabulary already, it's just too hard.I'm tutoring some ESL adults, and this book may be of more use with them.

Purchased this for my 7th grader who loves word games and puzzles. He does find this easy, so it's an excellent start to our homeschool day to get his mind in the right analytical place, while engaging him in something he enjoys so that he's eager (or at least willing) to sit down for lessons. It starts the morning off right, and then he's ready for his more challenging lessons. :) It would be a good vocabulary book for younger students. There are a few words that are actually names/proper nouns (like they couldn't find another word to lead into the next word), but most are regular words.

I homeschool and bought this for my 8 yr old who is in 3rd grade. She is advanced so I bought the 4-6 book, which turned out to be a perfect fit for her. She loves this workbook and even does extra pages for fun. If she is stuck on word, she gets out the dictionary and tries to find the new word...so she is working on vocab and dictionary practice, which is great. Great purchase!

I had been interested in doing real estate investing and I have paid for a few courses. But, after going through Luke's book, I was amazed that he literally gives you the exact blueprint you can use to flip houses successfully. Right from choosing the market to closing the deal. Great book, easy to read, but very specific on what action to take and when. I would highly recommend it if you are looking to get into real estate investing, especially with flipping houses.

Luke holds nothing back in this book. The cost of the material in this book should cost thousands of dollars! I am definitely going to have to go back through and re-read the book as he puts a ton of meat into these chapters. It reads very well. A lot of other real estate books are filled with 90% philosophical/motivational rambling that gets you fired up, but teaches you nothing. Then 10% of mediocre-enough information to make you dangerous when approaching real estate investing. This book is more like 95% completely useful information, but he definitely instills a small amount of purposeful motivation. I could go on and on, but this is one of the most packed-full of USEFUL information real estate books that I’ve ever read!

I'm not a book reader at all. In fact I can't remember the last time I read a book in it's entirety. This book kept me constantly interested by the excellent content and step by step process in to becoming a successful real estate investor. Author and active flipper, Luke Weber, explains his process for flipping houses that will not only give you the tools to become a successful investor but will also keep you from making costly mistakes in the process. I highly recommend reading this book even if you're an experienced flipper yourself.

I have paid thousands of dollars for many different REi trainings and they say if you pick up one nugget... your good! Luke Weber in this book drops a path of nuggets that allow you to be an effective and smart flipper, not only in your own town but remotely if you dare to venture out. Also learning how to determine better methods to determine an accurate ARV. So needless to say...you don't need to spend thousands of dollars to get these nuggets. Just 10 or 20 bucks is nothing, when you know it is going to save you or make you thousands! It's working for us everyday. I Highly recommend you get this book.

I loved this book, let me tell you why. Most of the training and mentorship pilfered by "GURU" wannabes don't give you half of the knowledge Luke's dropping in this book. If you're wanting to get into real estate, wholesaling, flipping, etc.- then The Flipping Blueprint is the book to read. If you're an experienced investor, I promise you will gain a few gold nuggets along the way and enjoy reading about Luke's story. For the newbies, Luke gives practical advice and mixes in his real estate journey so that you can see that's it's possible. Don't forget to join Luke's FB group and share your story.

I have read about a half dozen books on real estate, and this is by far the best, most thorough book I’ve read on the subject! It’s a quick & easy read! Luke Weber is a phenomenal writer, & teaches so much detail that other authors have let out. I read this on Kindle, but I’m ordering the hard cover book right now, so I can put chapter deviders in it & use it for reference. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in real estate investing. Get it, read it, you won’t be disappointed!

His blueprint has useful and thorough due diligence steps and it's a must-read for anyone interested in getting into the game.I'd strongly encourage anyone thinking of flipping homes to read this book first before taking action as it will save you countless hours of stress and a whole lot of money!

I've toyed around with the idea of flipping houses for a long time--I have the renovation skills, but I've lacked the business side of the operation. This booked changed that. I have been part of the Conn Biological Stains 'family' for over 30 years, and this latest edition is certainly as useful as its predecessors. Dr. Horobin has brought the same kind of expertise as did Dr. Frank Lillie in his two volumes. The problem, of course, is the cost. I purchased my copy used in 2003 for $75.00, and while I would pay the price to have it were I still in the market, its purchase would be a serious sacrifice. My opinion is that this specialty book resides best on the shelf of someone who is not only interested in/devoted to histochemistry (including fluorescence microscopy), because for one to be a specialist, one must have a reasonable collection of references. This book is a VERY special reference. It is so unique, that I cannot imagine a library at a university with a course in histology or histotechniques without a copy. Thus, before the price goes to $500, get the libraries to purchase the book, and shop around for a better deal than is found here at this time. This book is not only the best in its class, it is the only member of its class.

I have enjoyed several recipes from this grand opus of Jewish cooking, so much so that I feel strongly compelled to share these experiences with you, if I may. The first gastronomic delight that I discovered was the hummus. I have tried many different types of hummus - prepared by people of differing backgrounds - each enjoyable in their own right, yet, for me, the one that has stood out from all the rest was that one whose preparation is described so carefully in this easily readable book. There is just the right balance of ingredients (tahini, garlic, olive oil, garbanzo beans [buy the book and obtain the rest]), that no one flavor dominates, which would render the dish overwhelming. No. It is light and fresh, not to mention healthy. My only criticism is that you may not want to stop eating it. Enjoy!

I have now made two of Barbara Lori's dishes: one was the Honey Cake for Rosh Hashanah, the other was the Sweet and Sour Brisket.Each was excellent. I have made and tasted many Honey Cakes over my lifetime and I can say that this was if not the very best it was close to it. It had some unusual ingredients in it, such as whiskey and coffee. I have tasted cakes with coffee in them but this left an intriguing kind of mysterious taste which added to the pleasure of eating it. The whiskey I used was Jack Daniels and it also had an interesting quality. The entire recipe was for a wonderful taste experience and I highly recommend it as a dessert for any meal.The Sweet and Sour Brisket was made according to the instructions and the results were beyond belief terrific. Tender, tasty, melt in your mouth delicious. I could eaten all 5 lbs. of it myself it was so good. I passed it around to some friends and also were blown away by how good it was. In addition to the taste, it was also good for the cook, because it was so simple to do. All I had to do was put the 3 ingredients of the marinade on top and put it into the refrigerator over night (Refrigerator did all that work). Then I put it into the oven the next day and the oven did the cooking. So it was easy on the cook as well as a delicious product the enjoy.

My fondest memories of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur as a kid were having dinner at my grandparents' house, listening to lively conversation and eating delicious, home-cooked meals. Now, as an adult, I have my go to cookbook that I use to re-create the meals I grew up with. My favorites include the candied sweet potatoes, the brisket, chicken noodle soup and the honey cake. It was so easy to follow the recipes. I was pleased to find that I could actually cook as good as my grandmother - who knew! I highly recommend this book - for anyone who wants to wow their family or friends with good, comforting and healthy meals on the holidays and throughout the year.

The Jewish Apple Spice Cake is very easy to put together. Very good flavor and I would share this yummy desert at any gathering. This nice dense coffee cake is perfect for traveling. Can't wait to work my way thru the entire cook book!

This cookbook contains a lot of great recipes that have obviously been passed down through generations of women. The recipes are great for the holidays and easy to follow. While I am not the best cook in the world, I was still able to create great looking dishes that everyone in my family loved.

Was really excited to have a cookbook specifically geared to the Jewish New Year. Always looking for great recipes to serve to my family for the holidays. Tried the red potato recipe and my family loved it! It was easy and delicious!

I saw my 9-year-old niece playing "Mazes" game, and wanted to research the topic of maze generation some more.This book was a good starting point. I was surprised to discover that a maze is essentially a spanning tree representation. Even more surprising was to see algorithms like Dijkstra, Kruskal, Prim, random walk, typically used in networking or EDA (Electronic Design Automation tools - compilers for chips) to generate complex mazes.One thing I didn't like about the book was the choice of Ruby programming language. Python or C++ would have been a much better option, in my opinion.

Great book if you're interested in mazes. The code samples are all in Ruby, which, alas, is not one of the languages which I know. No matter, though, the author does a fine job of explaining the different maze generation algorithms, using words as well as code, and I've been able to get a half-dozen working already, with more in the works. He also includes some statistics about different mazes, which I found very interesting. If you've got an interest in mazes, and how to create, solve and analyze them, this is an excellent, very readable book, which I highly recommend.

By day I'm an enterprise developer working within the MSFT stack (C#, SQL Server, etc.) . I've been doing this kind of programming for 15+ years and to be frank I was starting to get burned out. But I think Mazes for Programmers reignited my passion for programming and given me new ideas/areas to pursue in the future.I would get up every morning around 4am just to work through a new algorithm! I first had to learn just enough Ruby to read the sample code before converting it to C#. But this process of going line-by-line forced me to understand what was actually going on. An unexpected side effect was that it forced to learn some interesting concepts about dynamically typed languages (Ruby) and see how they could be used to improve my C# (which is a statically typed language).My only gripe is that I couldn't do some of the weaving algorithms because I couldn't find a good ASCII-to-PNG converter for .NET to pick up on the visualizations that are needed for those. Also I never managed to get the Masking Grid and Recursive Backtracker algorithms to display nicely because of some oddities with .NET's System.Console implementation (at least that's what I've concluded).

Amazing book that has improved the maps on a game I am working on immensely. For my purposes I would say it is 4 stars but that is not the authors fault. The mazes are focused on the lines between a grid. If you want a grid based system where you are filling full squares for a map, like in a rogue-like, you will have to make adjustments. It's always fun to read through a tightly-focused technical book that will stand the test of time. All too often, books on algorithms and data structures are dry, and presented in a overly mathematical format. Not this book. All the code is there, explained in clear, concise prose, and accompanied by great diagrams.I had so much fun working through this book and building my own twisty little passages

I originally got this book to get more into programming, to have a hobby that I could make performing tree/graph based algorithms more intuitive for myself (as what you use, you retain better). Unfortunately, I do find the book hard to get into (I generally don't read text books or technical books unless it's for a class and I bought this for myself, and not for a class).What I can tell is, it has a lot of breadth. What I may not like about it is: it may not be as modular as it could be. Being a programming book, I don't know if they get into the computational complexity, the efficiency of the maze algorithms.
