Review

“A book meant to be cherished.” —The New York Times Book Review“Some writers simply possess the Gift. No matter what they bring out. . . . That’s certainly the case with Terry Pratchett.” —The Washington Post Book World“In the history of comic fantasy, Pratchett has no equals for invention or for range.” —The Wall Street Journal “Clever . . . insightful. . . . [Pratchett’s] wry wit is as good as gold.” —The Boston Globe“Pratchett is one of the great comic writers and storytellers of our time.” —The Guardian“One of the giants in the world of fantasy literature.” —New York Daily News“You can’t call what Pratchett does satire—it’s far too good-natured for that—but he has a satirist’s instinct for the absurd and a cartoonist’s eye for the telling detail.” —The Daily Telegraph (London) “A short story collection covering the entire career of one of our most prolific, and beloved, fantasy writers. . . . One of the main draws of [A Blink of the Screen] for serious fans, or aspiring writers, will be the chance to trace the evolution of Pratchett’s craft—but there’s plenty here for readers who have never heard of him to enjoy.” —Kirkus Reviews“A little absurdism, a little wordplay, a lot of inventive fantasy, a lot of heart, and a deep-seated fascination with the way technologies change societies. . . . Pratchett can easily fill an entire bookcase by himself. . . . But he has kept the piquant sense of someone playing with language, with new worlds, and with the familiar old tropes that he enjoys upending.” —NPR“What Pratchett does is not just great, but unparalleled. In five hundred years, it won’t be the Nobel laureates who are being studied. It’s going to be this guy.” —Brandon Sanderson, Tor.com “One of the greatest comic novelists of all time, in his way the equal of Wodehouse and Waugh.” —GQ (UK) “The master of humorous fantasy . . . [Pratchett] should be recognized as one of the more significant contemporary English-language satirists.” —Publishers Weekly

Terry Pratchett is one of the greatest comic - philosophic - observational writers of all time. His Discworld series is a fantastic collection of wonderfully described characters and fantastic events, and his eagle eye for foibles and compassion for the weaknesses and strengths of human nature spans the range from hilarious to heroic to poignant, even when the characters might not officially be of the human persuasion. This book is a collection of his short stories from some of his earlier writing through his most recent work and gives us insight into the way he constructs characters and stories as only short stories can. It includes almost three dozen stories from various worlds, from Discworld to our own, with multiple stops in between. Often short stories won't catch your imagination as well as longer works, but this collection was just like opening a bag of potato chips - I went from one story to the next one after the other and only stopped when I ran out of consumables. A wonderful addition to his work that I highly recommend.

If you are a fan of Terry Pratchett, as am I, you need to add this one to your collection. This is a group of short stories he wrote over the years beginning in 1963 to the near present. It starts with a story he wrote when he was 13 as an assignment in grade school. Amazing! Each story has a little intro, explaining its origin and when and where it was published. Some of these stories contain the origins of other, more familiar Pratchett stores and series. I was amazed to find the short story that lead to the "Long Earth" series. What was so amazing is that short story was written around the same time as "The Colour Of Magic." Enjoy.

For goodness sake! It's Terry Pratchett! Of course - it is fun to read, has unique characters, and more than a dose of magic and humor. What makes this collection especially fun is that these are short bits of writing - some of which 'grew up' to become the stories and characters we all know and love. Pratchett comments on each of the writing and explains the origins of ideas, and how they may have developed later.Pratchett includes his first published story - published in a school collection, written when he was 13. Holy Cow!! I read it and thought, "Thirteen? He wrote THAT at thirteen? Who does that? Who thinks like that?

This is a wonderful collection of Sir Terry Pratchett's short stories that hadn't made it across the Pond until now. The first selection, "The Hades Business," written when Sir Terry was thirteen, demonstrates the precociousness of the boy, as well as the perspicacity and wit of the man he would become. My favorite is the "The Sea and Little Fishes," which takes place on the Discworld and includes Granny Weatherwax (my role model) and Nanny Ogg at their best. If you're a fan of Terry Pratchett, buy this book. Read it. You'll love it. If you're not a fan yet, buy it anyway. You'll become one.

Reminds me of the samplers people used to make to illustrate various embroidery stitches. This collection includes gems from the spectrum of Mr Pratchett's career that display his versatility in what he says was the type of work he found most difficult to do well, namely, the short story.I take him at his word that he struggled greatly, but he makes it look easy, in that, in this reader's opinion, nowhere does he fail to ensorcel both mind & heart with his tales, distracted by the mechanics of writing. His youthful offering, from age 13, for whose "flaws" he offers profuse apologies, persuades me that I'd give thanks to God were I to be half so talented before I die.The wonderful illustrations also deserve mention, are themselves worth the price of the book, & the last of them elicited a nostalgic smile as I contemplated his recent passing from among us.

I think readers will have to be Pratchett fans, as I most definitely am, to truly enjoy most of these stories. It's simply fascinating to read his early writings to see how his mind evolved to the DiskWorld -- Sir Terry's early stuff is better than what many fully-developed writers produce!

As a huge fan of Terry Pratchett, I had to get this book. I was not disappointed at all. BUT, must warn you, DO NOT read the preface until after you have read all the stories, and DO NOT even read the little intro to each story, until after you have read it. The preface and little intros contain many spoilers, which rather ruin some of the stories!!!A few stories are almost silly, and not great 'Pratchett' but all give a great insight into Mr. Pratchett's style as he was getting started.VERY interesting are the non-Discworld stores! With 'Nation,' and 'Dodger,' and the 'Long' series we are now getting this 'other' Pratchett, but nice to read some older short stories with his other ideas.Yes!

A collection of short fiction from fantasy great Terry Pratchett. Pratchett's writing is wonderfully multi-dimensional, incorporating multiple facets into his personalities, weaving multiple storylines, and injecting humour and commentary of varying levels of subtlety and depth. It's an adventure to read (or reread) any of his writing and this is no exception. The writing here is a good primer for a newcomer, showcasing some of his simpler pieces alongside award-winning shorts. While it lacks somewhat in cohesiveness (being, primarily, a collection of his random shorts), it makes up for it in spades with the immediately engrossing nature of most of the stories. A great read for both fan and newbie alike.

I finished reading "A Dog's Way Home" and first thing this morning was a plan to write a review.I was luckily chosen by the publisher to read an advanced copy of the book.W. Bruce Cameron's books have been my favorites, and this one is right at the top. A Dog's Purpose will always be my favorite, as it was the first "dog" book of his. But "A Dog's Way Home" is right up there. This book, as are the others, are written from the point of view of the dog. In this case, a possible Pit Bull mix, named Bella. She, as all dogs I've known or have been part of my family, does all she can to please her "person". She wants to be a "good dog", she wants to "give comfort", she wants to do all of the things that all of our pets want. And, as usual, she learns these things from her "person".However in this book, Bella, the mix pit bull, is not "welcome" in the town she lives in, in fact, she is legally banned as animal control deemed her a "pit bull", that legally can be taken by animal control and put down. Her person does all he can to keep her with him, she gets lost. She learns things from other people and other animals on her travels of trying to "go home", all things that kept her alive, as she helped others live. While lost, she gave comfort, was a good dog, and at times, knew she was doing something that her person would tell her she was a bad dog. But, it was all in the quest of "Go Home". It amazes me that Mr. Cameron can "be the dog" as he does....My little dachshund is a work in progress to being "Bella".This book is working to remove the stigma of pit bulls and other dogs that some consider "dangerous". I've always known that pit bulls can be soft and gentle. Any dog can. Any dog can be mean, angry and dangerous, if that is what their owner teaches them to be. That's the problem, some pit bulls and others were taught this. Bella was taught to be "a good dog". Not all pits or similar are mean by nature, they are taught that. It's not the dog, it's the person! For this wonderful book, if Amazon permitted 10 stars or above, that is what I would give it. An amazing book that I hope will help remove the stigma on breed specific dogs, as they are not "bad dogs", they were just not taught "LOVE".Hopeful that Mr.Cameron won't mind, a one line quote from this book that stood out to me, Bella had a thought "If a dog couldn't trust humans, how was life even possible"Keep on writing Mr. Cameron, this "person" will continue to read!

I learned something with this book – that I need to stop being surprised just how good W. Bruce Cameron truly is. I have loved all his books – from the No. 1 best-seller "A Dog's Purpose" to his "Repo" series and everything in between, but his latest, "A Dog's Way Home," is as much a delight as anything he's done. Once again, Cameron is telling a story from a dog's point of view, and he doesn't disappoint or, most importantly, repeat himself. There are certainly those elements that fans of Cameron crave – the humor, the warmth, the emotion, and a gosh darn good dog, but there is also a call to arms in this book, which deals with unfair laws in some parts of the country that are outlawing pit bulls. What Cameron always does best in his books is to drive home a message, and he skillfully does that here. You will pull for Bella every step of the way in "A Dog's Way Home," and you will feel strongly about many of the human characters, too, which may be the best part of the book. Cameron has always made readers love the characters in his book – be they human or canine, but "A Dog's Way Home" in, however strange this may sound in a book about a dog, it was the humans who ended up starring in this great wag-of-the-tail tale. Dog lovers will see a little bit of themselves in the various humans who, in their own ways, loved Bella, needed Bella, found comfort in Bella. It was a joy to read this book. Pure joy.

This is wonderful story about a short-haired muscular mutt struggling to find her way home. Bella was seized from her owner because of Denver's breed discriminatory law. The book was so engaging I actually stayed on a plane to finish it while the rest of the passenger's deplaned-and that has NEVER happened. Let's hope folks who live in communities with breed specific or breed discriminatory laws buy copies of this book for their public officials and rise up to get breed discrimination repealed. Politics is not a spectator sport. In America responsible dog owner's should be allowed to own whatever breed of dog they choose. It's that simple.

Just finished reading another of W. Bruce Cameron's wonderful books. A Dog's Way Home highlights the plight of a pitbull mix dog in a town that does not allow this breed of dog. Bella was rescued by her owner from living under a house that was to be demolished, only to be separated from her owner due to the breed specific law. Her many "adventures" to stay alive and try to get across the mountains and back to her owner kept this reader feeling a variety of emotions as I followed what happened to her in her travels. I could not put this book down and when I did have to stop for a while, I couldn't wait to see what was to happen next. A Dog's Way Home is another great story told from the viewpoint of the dog and shows the persistence of an animal when searching for the safety and love of her owner.

I had the good fortune to receive and read an advance copy of this book from the publisher. W. Bruce Cameron has outdone himself once again. Bella, a mixed breed puppy, is labeled a pit bull in Denver, where they are illegal. She is taken to a foster home in Durango until her person, Lucas, can find a place to live where she will be allowed. Bella only knows that she must Go Home to her person and escapes. From there she embarks on a long, adventure filled journey back to Lucas. Told by Bella, this book touches on many subjects including veterans and PTSD. It will make you laugh, cry and celebrate the compassion and unconditional love of animals. There are new friends to meet such as Mother Cat, Big Kitten, Dutch and many others. Cat lovers will love this dog book! I'm ready to read it again.

Wow.I am new to the AS/400 and RPG (I've been a programmer since the 70's). After using several other books to try and learn RPG IV, I found this one. What a treasure. It is well written, well organized and tells you what you need to know when you need to know it! It is a good reference book for a beginner and the examples are understandable. If you are starting in RPG and need a pathway to RPG ILE this is the book.

I recently got back into an RPG programming job after being away from it for a few years. This book has helped refamiliarize me with the language and has been well worth the money to me. Much easier to use than the IBM manuals and easier to find information and answers quickly. Well worth having if you're an RPG programmer.

Great book ! Anyone looking for a concise, yet complete and even fun (if you like RPG IV) reference to the language, that is not boring or dense at all, this book is the right choice for you.

Excellent Reference Book. Whenever I needed clarity or just looking up new techniques I found it.

I spent a lot of money on this book and I found that the printed qualify of the book is horrible, such a low quality product. Don't think I will every purchase another book from this publisher

100%

When I got my first job as an RPG programmer (never having worked on the iSeries before) I bought this book thinking that it would get me up to speed, was I ever wrong. What a mess of a book - a lot of it seems like it was copied directly from the IBM website and re-worded (some of the API docs are wrong which I discovered later). After reading this book you might feel like an idiot cause you didn't understand any of it. The author assumed that everyone already knew RPG III which in itself is even more weird that RPG IV.

saved my butt for over 25 years. This volume is for programmers who have a working knowledge of the language. Examples are excellent and reliable. Expensive (outrageous) but highly recommended.
