Britt-Marie Was Here: A Novel, by Fredrik Backman

Review

"Warm and satisfying." (People)“Backman has written another bestseller with his latest novel. While at first Britt-Marie seems intolerable and aggravating, readers are quickly endeared to her obsessive-compulsive ways and frank honesty. At first the writing style comes off sharp; however, readers quickly see that is how Britt-Marie processes the world and it too becomes something amicable. Heartfelt and truly stirring, Britt-Marie Was Here resonates long after the last page is read.” (RT Magazine)“The bestselling author of A MAN CALLED OVE returns with this heartwarming story about a woman rediscovering herself after personal crisis. Backman reveals Britt-Marie’s need for order….with clear, tight descriptions. Insightful and touching, this is a sweet and inspiring story about truth and transformation. Fans of Backman’s will find another winner in these pages.” (Publishers Weekly)"Universal...Backman hits a nice note between overly sweet and hard-boiled fiction; excellent for book clubs." (Library Journal (starred review))"Britt-Marie’s metamorphosis from cocoon to butterfly seems all the more remarkable for the utterly discouraging environment in which it takes place." (Booklist)“A brilliant mix of belly-laughs, profound insight and captivating events delivered… with Backman's pitch-perfect dialogue and an unparalleled understanding of human nature." (Shelf Awareness)PRAISE FOR A MAN CALLED OVE“A charming debut…You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll feel new sympathy for the curmudgeons in your life. You’ll also want to move to Scandinavia, where everything’s cuter.” (People)“Even the most serious reader of fiction needs light relief, and for that afternoon when all you want is charm, this is the perfect book." (San Francisco Chronicle)"A light hearted, deeply moving novel about a grumpy but loveable curmudgeon who finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next door. This quirky debut is a thoughtful and charming exploration of the impact one life has on countless others—and an absolute delight." (CBS Local)"An inspiring affirmation of love for life and acceptance of people for their essence and individual quirks. A Man Called Ove is a perfect selection for book clubs. It's well written and replete with universal concerns. It lacks violence and profanity, is life-affirming and relationship-driven. The book is bittersweet, tender, often wickedly humorous and almost certain to elicit tears. I contentedly wept my way through a box of tissues when I first read the novel and again when I savored it for a second time.” (BookBrowse.com)

Seldom do I not finish a book---but Britt-Marie was driving me nuts. I read Ove also, it was OK. Britt-Marie seemed plain dumb,. Who wants to read about someone completely out of touch with the world---and no desire to check in. No wonder her husband left. Her interest were fixed on nonsense--use a coaster under a drink, clean the windows, refresh the mattress with soda., etc etc. I am sure she is going to change. That is probably the story. She has a loooong way to go.correction (later)I just reread my review of "A man Named Ove" and I did like it. I liked it very much and gave it 4 stars and a good review.

Britt-Marie was Here is the best book I've read this year. Simply put, it is fantastic.Britt-Marie is difficult, frustrating and socially awkward. She is also insensitive and kind of rude. A minor character in My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry, Britt-Marie was instantly disliked in that book and is not well liked in the beginning of this one either. However, Fredrik Backman has this endearing way of making old curmudgeons likeable and being extremely successful at it (i.e. Ove and Britt-Marie). Her character, her ocd, her social ineptitude.. they grow on you. Here, we find out why she is the way she is and we discover that, due to her childhood and her marriage, she has felt invisible her whole life. She has trouble figuring out who she really is and is fanatical simply because it is the only thing she can control. Upon losing everything, she decides to find a job and is forced to move to a small town. In the process she finds a sense of humor, discovers that she is capable of making friends and also finds her sense of self.Fredrik Backman's A Man Called Ove was one of my favorite books ever. His writing style is smart, funny, quirky and just downright amazing. His characters are rich, well developed and beloved. In addition to Britt-Marie, Vega, Somebody, Bank, Sami and "the girl from the unemployment office" lent heart and soul to the story and gave Britt-Marie exactly what she needed: friends and reasons to go have at it.I didn't think it was possible for Mr. Backman to write another book that I'd love as much as "Ove" but if truth be told, I love this one more. It was truly phenomenal.

I am so in love with this author! I was given A Man Called Ove for Christmas a few weeks ago and could not put it down. I can't recall the last time I literally laughed OUT LOUD reading a book, and with this one I did several times. And cried. And smiled. The book ended and I felt that saddness like when a good friend visits from far away then leaves to go back home.So I immediately looked for another book by him and found Britt-Marie Was Here. Another incredible book where you fall in love with the characters, you recognize yourself in some, people you know in others, and you cheer for them, hurt for them and all at once feel like you could walk right in and know everyone immediately...like you've never been away.I can't wait to start my next book by Fredrik Backman. His stories are such treasure. I'm grateful we were introduced by one who knows me so well. enjoy!

Absolutely loved this book! I'd began my journey with the author in My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry where we first meet Britt-Marie, a rather annoying, aggravating, socially inept character, the type of character we've probably all met in real life, and yet sometimes we want to know what makes them tick. Was Britt-Marie always this way, did she become this way and if so, why? Will she always be this way - which is why we're reading the book. Britt-Marie Was Here answers those questions, is amusing, dramatic, thoughtful, poignant . Backman's books are deceptively simple tales laced with little gems of wisdom. I like to read before bed and eagerly looked forward to the next chapter and almost hated when I reached the end. A side note - anyone who prefers cleanliness and order, likes to clean, or cleans furiously out of frustration, anger, revenge or denial will see a part of themselves in this book I certainly did. I also rediscovered the many uses for baking soda. My only issue with Backman's books is that I read them faster than he can write them.

This book starts off like one of those irritating Amelia Bedelia creations for kids: a dolt at the forefront who is so literal that she invariably messes up anything she touches. But then ... not too far in, Britt-Marie begins to acquire dimensions and, even more important, she evolves into a truly sympathetic character. A woman who's been put down in one way or another for her entire life, of course she comforts herself (and rewards others) by cleaning everything in sight, making the view of her immediate world acceptable, even pleasing. Having accepted a job overseeing the recreation center in a financially devastated town, without actually trying, her presence begins to make itself felt. At the core of it all is the local children's passion for soccer--a game about which she knows nothing. It's quite an accomplishment for author Backman to make us care about all the characters in this novel. And we do care - particularly about Britt-Marie who scarcely knows herself after a childhood with an uncaring mother and decades of marriage to a dismissive, controlling man. By the halfway mark, we're rooting for her and for the children, and for the local policeman who's taken a shine to this woman. This was my introduction to Fredrik Backman. I intend to read his other books because I was so taken and so touched by the townful of well-conceived characters he brought to life and about whom he made me care.RECOMMENDED.

Review

From the reviews:This is an excellent book for its intended audience: statisticians who wish to learn Bayesian methods. Although designed for a statistics audience, it would also be a good book for econometricians who have been trained in frequentist methods, but wish to learn Bayes. In relatively few pages, it takes the reader through a vast amount of material, beginning with deep issues in statistical methodology such as de Finetti’s theorem, through the nitty-gritty of Bayesian computation to sophisticated models such as generalized linear mixed effects models and copulas. And it does so in a simple manner, always drawing parallels and contrasts between Bayesian and frequentist methods, so as to allow the reader to see the similarities and differences with clarity. (Econometrics Journal) “Generally, I think this is an excellent choice for a text for a one-semester Bayesian Course. It provides a good overview of the basic tenets of Bayesian thinking for the common one and two parameter distributions and gives introductions to Bayesian regression, multivariate-response modeling, hierarchical modeling, and mixed effects models. The book includes an ample collection of exercises for all the chapters. A strength of the book is its good discussion of Gibbs sampling and Metropolis-Hastings algorithms. The author goes beyond a description of the MCMC algorithms, but also provides insight into why the algorithms work. …I believe this text would be an excellent choice for my Bayesian class since it seems to cover a good number of introductory topics and giv the student a good introduction to the modern computational tools for Bayesian inference with illustrations using R. (Journal of the American Statistical Association, June 2010, Vol. 105, No. 490)“Statisticians and applied scientists. The book is accessible to readers having a basic familiarity with probability theory and grounding statistical methods. The author has succeeded in writing an acceptable introduction to the theory and application of Bayesian statistical methods which is modern and covers both the theory and practice. … this book can be useful as a quick introduction to Bayesian methods for self study. In addition, I highly recommend this book as a text for a course for Bayesian statistics.” (Lasse Koskinen, International Statistical Review, Vol. 78 (1), 2010)“The book under review covers a balanced choice of topics … presented with a focus on the interplay between Bayesian thinking and the underlying mathematical concepts. … the book by Peter D. Hoff appears to be an excellent choice for a main reading in an introductory course. After studying this text the student can go in a direction of his liking at the graduate level.” (Krzysztof Łatuszyński, Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2011 m)“The book is a good introductory treatment of methods of Bayes analysis. It should especially appeal to the reader who has had some statistical courses in estimation and modeling, and wants to understand the Bayesian interpretation of those methods. Also, readers who are primarily interested in modeling data and who are working in areas outside of statistics should find this to be a good reference book. … should appeal to the reader who wants to keep with modern approaches to data analysis.” (Richard P. Heydorn, Technometrics, Vol. 54 (1), February, 2012)

From the Back Cover

This book provides a compact self-contained introduction to the theory and application of Bayesian statistical methods. The book is accessible to readers having a basic familiarity with probability, yet allows more advanced readers to quickly grasp the principles underlying Bayesian theory and methods. The examples and computer code allow the reader to understand and implement basic Bayesian data analyses using standard statistical models and to extend the standard models to specialized data analysis situations. The book begins with fundamental notions such as probability, exchangeability and Bayes' rule, and ends with modern topics such as variable selection in regression, generalized linear mixed effects models, and semiparametric copula estimation. Numerous examples from the social, biological and physical sciences show how to implement these methodologies in practice. Monte Carlo summaries of posterior distributions play an important role in Bayesian data analysis. The open-source R statistical computing environment provides sufficient functionality to make Monte Carlo estimation very easy for a large number of statistical models and example R-code is provided throughout the text. Much of the example code can be run ``as is'' in R, and essentially all of it can be run after downloading the relevant datasets from the companion website for this book. Peter Hoff is an Associate Professor of Statistics and Biostatistics at the University of Washington. He has developed a variety of Bayesian methods for multivariate data, including covariance and copula estimation, cluster analysis, mixture modeling and social network analysis. He is on the editorial board of the Annals of Applied Statistics.

This book is not a first course book.... I did stats for two years before trying this book and could not get through it. I've been in stats courses for three years and even now get stuck whenever I try this book. It's just not a first course level/appropriate level for the title. It had good programming tips, but that's what redeems it.As for a first course in Bayesian, try kruschke's book with the puppies. It's much simpler to get through.

The text is fine, although as another reviewer mentioned - the homework is frustrating. None of it is the sort of problem where you can go back and follow along with work done in the chapter. Not at all good for someone who prefers to learn by first mimicking, and then exploring. No, the BIG problem is that many of the formulas are stored as images since equations are incompatible with the file format. If you try to increase the text size so you can actually read them, the formulas stay the same tiny size. Trying to use the windows accessibility tools just results in a pixelated illegible formula.I would love to have all my texts in electronic format, but not until this issue can be fixed.

Extremely overpriced! I had to pay $60 for a paperback, and there are still TYPOs in the book? Are you kidding me? The publishing industry overcharges, but never fails to deliver in quality. However, the book is excellent for it's content, particularly for someone who is unfamiliar with Bayesian stats and only intermediary familiarity with probability distributions. The concepts are well explained with examples . However, this is not a standalone book, and probably Gelman's book is worth looking at along with this.

This is an appropriate practical introduction to Bayesian methods for someone who has taken both a college-level probability and statistics course. The multidimensional examples may require a bit of linear algebra. It doesn't include much comparison with frequentist techniques, so some familiarity there would help the reader put the ideas in context.Compared to a book like Christian Robert's excellent _The Bayesian Choice_, this book may appear inadequate, because it is less than half the size, is often less dense and scholarly, and is (currently at Amazon) almost double the price. However, I'm happy I have both because Hoff's book is more practical for someone who actually wants to use Bayesian statistics in practical situations. Hoff spends a lot of time discussing simple examples with wide application, and he actually shows the R code to compute the answers with MCMC techniques. However, after reading the book, I still don't feel totally prepared to apply R in real-life Bayesian situations. It would be nice for a practical book like Hoff's to include some hands-on tips about how to do these problems (R packages to use, basic modeling strategies, common pitfalls, speed concerns, assessing convergence, etc.).

This book is a smooth introduction to the concept of Bayesian statistics. Anyone with fundamental level knowledge of college statistics could follow. The only thing which could be added to the current version is more detailed Appendix about common distributions and their conjugates.

Peter does a great job explaining material clearly. However, I really wish he offered solutions to problems in the back of the book. This would make self-learning easier.

This is an excellent book but will be easier to understand if you have a M.S. level knowledge of classical (frequentist) statistics. It is clear, concise, and has good examples.

The book is used for my Bayesian stats class. I think it's easy to read and very clear. But you should make sure you do have some prior knowledge about statistics and probability, because the author takes it as granted.
