I hope you packed a lunch, because you’re not gonna want to put this book down.” —Joey Bragg, actor from the Disney Channel’s Liv and Maddie “As the breathtaking action unfolds, the mysteries pile up—and there is danger on every page. My kind of story! I want to see more, more, MORE!” —R.L. Stine, author of Goosebumps and Fear Street “This adventure mixes several popular elements, such as superheroes, mysteries, and global warming. For kids who enjoy suspenseful adventures about saving the world and superhero-adjacent stories.” —School Library Journal “Pearson integrates timely elements through the focus on climate change and allusions to the refugee experience, while Gonzalez’s artwork is vivid and crisp, riffing on a classic comic style. Pearson and Gonzalez’s take on the iconic figures offers good fun, especially for young readers who are just discovering the DC universe.” —Publishers Weekly “This all-new Super Sons is a surefire, fun read as four young strangers meet and band together against the looming backdrop of global doom.” —Dan Jurgens, author, The Adventures of Superman and Batman Beyond  “A super-fun, super-exciting, and most of all super-story!”  —Peter J. Tomasi, author, Super Sons, Batman: Detective Comics, Superman   “Pearson’s first graphic novel series shows how much young people can step up to challenges when need be, all while growing a little more into the adults they will soon become… Even while tackling large-scale global issues, one of the more enduring things about this book is the focus on character.” —GeekMom “This book has it all: action, adventure, mystery, and plenty of obstacles for our next generation superheroes to overcome.” —Story Monsters Ink

As part of DC's Zoom imprint, Super Sons: The Polarshield Project introduces young readers to Jonathan Kent and Damian (although in this story he prefers to go by Ian) Wayne as they uncover an environmental conspiracy that could possibly destroy the world. The story focuses on the two young men who happen to be the sons of Superman and Batman, respectively, and their friends Candace (who has a secret family history) and Tilly, a go-getter who helps Jon.With Superman on a mission to Mars and Batman looking for answers on his own, the four youngsters team up to find out what's really going on with coastal flooding, the Polarshield Project (which will hopefully save the planet from environmental destruction), and a bizarre number of illnesses that seem to be tied to Sage Foods. The kids face environmental enemies and their dark leader, Avryc, in an attempt to discover what's really going on in the city of Wyndemere and to find out if they can stop the bad guys without the help of Superman or Batman. The story moves along at a very quick pace. It's so quick, in fact, that I had to go back and reread certain panels of the story. I'm sure that most younger readers (the book is aimed at 8-12 year olds) will have to do the same. Also, some of the panels are a bit confusing to follow at times. The artwork by Ile Gonzalez if colorful but somehow subdued at the same time. The art is cleanly drawn and fits the age range that it is directed towards. Author Ridley Pearson does a decent job of allowing the story to flow as well, but the dialogue is definitely aimed at the lower end of the targeted age of the readers. This book sets up the second volume with an explosive cliffhanger. I'm sure that many young readers will want to check out the next chapter of this story, but I also think that many of them might feel as if the writing is a tad too young for their reading level. That is why I'm giving this book three stars. It's a bit confusing at times and the writing could be just a little bit more intelligent.

As someone who is very into comics and is eager to share that my kids, I really WANTED to like Super Sons: The PolarShield Project. I'm very familiar with the Jon Kent and Damian (here called Ian) Wayne characters and I completely support the idea of creating comics aimed at younger age-groups. (The reality is, the main purchasers of the comic-book series are college age or over and very few of these products are truly aimed at kids.)Unfortunately, I can't recommend this book. The art is amateurish and the coloring, in particular, is muddy and dull. I don't know if that's the fault of the colorist or maybe it's the paper it was printed on, but there's nothing fun or exciting about the art in this book, which is a pretty major drawback. Beyond that, the writing is poor. The author has written numerous books but I think this is his first comic-book script and it shows. The dialogue does not flow well at all and he isn't able to capture the characters' unique "voices." Writing comics is very different from writing novels - in terms of how to write a script and also in terms of the pacing - and Ridley Pearson hasn't quite got the transition yet.All in all, this is not a very good book. If you're looking for something to get young kids interested in comics, I'd really recommend those early Ultimate Spider-Man trade paperbacks by Bendis and Bagley or the original Runaways trade paperback by Brian K. Vaughan. But Super Sons: The PolarShield Project just isn't very good and I don't think it's going excite young readers.

The above 4 star rating should really be a 3 1/2, and that's based as much on faith in Pearson as the quality of this volume. It goes almost without saying that Ridley Pearson is not only one of our better adult writers, but also a top writer of "kid" novels; The "peter/starcathchers" series he wrote with Dave Barry is, arguably, one of the major YA serties of the last decade.Which is why it's not a pleasure to note that this, his first graphic, is at least somewhat disappointing.Don't get me wrong; it's a solid, professional jpb, ably illustrated and interesting enough to get you to come back for more... BUTFirst: It's listed a Book 1 in the series without any indication of how many "books" this particular tale will require. And it will require at least ONE more as the tale ends rather abruptly on a cliffhanger, not unlike a TV pilot. And like, said pilot this first book does little more than introduce its characters and premises. Only, at the end, we still have only the sketchiest knowledge of these characters (too much faith is put on our just accepting them on said faith based on "who" they are) and really not much more than an outline of the premise. But, as I say at the outset, this IS Ridley Pearson, so I'll hang for the ride at least for a little while longer

This is a great little book with a great premise of super heros tween or teen children coming into their own. Their angst and interaction is well thought out and for the most part, their internal dialogues and reactions seem pretty well thought out. The art work was very strong and combined with the story, you were pulled along. We all really liked it except that it was not a satisfying ending, with just a minor victory and lots of huge hanging plot lines. We want more!

One of the most interesting things about reading this book 62 years after it was first published is to learn that many of the modern day design gurus were not the originators of a great deal of the design concepts, ideas, principles and approaches to business that they write about. Aside from some cultural differences and the Internet this book applies today.Dreyfuss's determination to research, study and learn the needs of the end user is an enduring theme and major takeaway for me.The book's margins is where Designing for People comes alive for me. The ample space, sketches and handwritten notes directing the reader to photos and points of reference are superb! I appreciate the photographs as well.If you are considering design, are a budding designer and or are just interested in design, this is a must have book.

Dreyfuss' "Designing for People" proved an inspiring collection of anecdotes and stories exemplifying the true functions of an industrial designer. Nostalgia combined with some sage-like advice, Dreyfuss reminds the designer of his or her role in the product development field. To paraphrase Dreyfuss: the industrial designer is a person who wears many hats; one who is part artist, engineer, businessman, researcher, politician, builder, and guinea pig. His assessment is accurate and proven, and his words of wisdom should be used as a guideline for all industrial designers in modern times. That said, Dreyfuss does tend to come across very matter-of-factly at times, leaving little gray area in his black and white world. As a result Mr. Dreyfuss sides with the Bauhaus approach where form follows function-indeed, he often mentions the resulting form of a product as a side-note, if he mentions it at all. Whereas this may be an annoyance for some readers, the lessons you take away from his life experiences are truly informative and insightful. As the amount of 3D design in product development grows, designers today are faced with the difficulty of "skin designing" verses thoughtful, foundation-based designing. If nothing else, this book should serve as inspiration for those of us in the field to design based on function and aesthetics-we have a duty and responsibility to client and society to base designs on research and thoughtfulness, not simply the known tools in a computer program. In any case, DFP should be on the required reading list for industrial design students to teach the history and guidelines of our profession. "Designing for People" serves as not only a reminder of the way it used to be, but it also inspires the designer to believe how it should be now.

Beautiful and inspiring book. Wonderful little drawings in the margins to add to the feeling of the creative process involved. I am a 22 year graphic designer and have always considered myself customer oriented. This book helps you see the extraordinary in what designers do in reflecting on tools we use everyday that make our lives easier, like a clock and office chairs.

A classic written by an icon - not really modern, but a wonderful insight into one of the founders of modern industrial design and his timeless principles of making things fit people.

A classic. Dreyfus was the first designer to write about how things should be designed to work they way people think they should. His work was decades before Steve Jobs and all of us User Experience people started talking about the same things.

This book is the first step in making sure that you are designing with the user in mind. Even with the age of the book the ideals of it still hold true just as much as they did then. If you have any interest in design (and know that doesn't mean just aesthetics) this is a must read.

A book written many years ago by a great industrial designer. Lots of great information which is still pertinent today.

If you don't know who Henry Dreyfus is, you should read this book. One of the great industrial designers This book, although a bit dry, shows the thought process in designing for the consumer.

The Book of Why is a popular introduction to Judea Pearl’s branch of causal inference. But it is also so much more.Pearl has written many other textbooks introducing his graphical approach. But in this book, Pearl provides an engaging narrative of the history of causal inference, the important distinctions he sees in his branch and its importance for the future of Artificial Intelligence.Briefly, Pearl views classical statistics as seriously flawed in not having developed a meaningful theory of causality. While able to demonstrate correlation, Pearl asserts that in classical statistics all relationships are two-way: that is 2x=3y+6 can also be written 3y=2x-6. We are left in doubt as to whether x causes y or y causes x.Fundamentally, Pearl sees this problem as still plaguing all artificial intelligence and statistics. In its place, Pearl argues that the exact causal relationship between all variables should be explicitly symbolized in graphical form and only then can mathematical operations tease out the precise causal effect. To be transparent, I am trained in the Rubin approach to causal inference and disagree with some of Pearl’s history and characterization of statistics. But that is not the point. The history is well-written, engaging and understandable by the lay reader. Similarly, his account of graphical causal inference theory is followable even for someone like myself who did not learn these techniques in graduate school. The last part of the book, where Pearl opines on the future of AI, is the most sensational. Pearl believes that if computers were programmed to understand his symbolization of causal inference theory they would be empowered to realize counterfactuals and thus engage in moral decision making. Furthermore, since Pearl himself was a pioneer in deep learning, his characterization of contemporary AI as hopelessly doomed in the quest to replicate human cognition because of a lack of understanding in causal inference will be sure to garner attention. But one would be misguided to think that speculations about AI or mischaracterizations of other kinds of causal inference make this book any less of a classic. For the first time, Pearl has written a popular, interesting and provocative book describing his branch of causal inference theory—past, present and future. This book is a must read then, not only for causal inference theorists, but more widely for those with any interest in contemporary developments in computer science, statistics or Artificial Intelligence. A book that, like Kahneman’s Thinking Fast and Slow, is a triumphant summary of a lifetime of work in scientific topics that have ramifications, not only for fellow scientists, but for all of humanity.

Wow! I am a physician epidemiologist with a doctorate in epidemiology and I teach computational epidemiology (with R) at UC Berkeley. I had the opportunity to study biostatistics from the best professors at UC Berkeley School of Public Health (Steve Selvin, Nicolas Jewell, Richard Brand, and many more). The field of causal inference was just beginning to take off with biostatisticians piloting the plane (Mark van der Laan, Nicolas Jewell, etc.). I avoided a rigorous study of causal inference but eventually came around after studying Bayesian networks for decision analysis (FYI: Pearl pioneered Bayesian networks). Judea Pearl's Bayesian networks and causal graphs connects the fields of statistics, epidemiology, decision and computer sciences in a profoundly elegant way. His work empowers and expands the potential of "big data." This is the first book written for the general public on this topic. It will have a **huge impact**. Causality and causal reasoning is at the core of everything we see, do, and imagine. He provides a graphical tool (causal graphs) for encoding expert knowledge (including community wisdom and experience). Anyone --- yes, anyone --- can learn the basics. For additional rigor, there are structural causal models (functional equations). I now consider it data science "malpractice" to design studies, analyze data, or adjust for confounders without using causal graphs. As he covers extensively in the history of causality, human brains are wired to resist new paradigms. Be intellectually wise and humble and read this book -- you will not regret it!

I hate to tell you this, but science, at least real science, has linked cause and effect. That's basically how science works. What this book is doing is trying to explain why the social "sciences" have yet to link cause and effect, and the simple answer is that the social "sciences" is not real science. The social world works by interweaving individual factors into social dynamics that create new emergent products. In science, you isolate variables to determine cause and effect. You can't do this with social systems. It's like trying to make sense of a sentence by separating each word and then each letter. The sentence only makes sense as a whole. This author is just trying to add more math and sciency formulas to the social sciences to make it look more scientific. I studied Economics. This is exactly what they do in Economics and have yet to prove anything or link any cause to effect, simply because economic systems are far too complex and can't be separated and isolated like a lab experiment. What the entire farce is doing is called obfuscation. If you are so confused by the math, technical jargon, sciency graphs and tables and data and figures, then you just feel dumb and agree with whatever idiotic conclusion the author invents. Look how cutting taxes and increasing federal spending stimulates the economy with all my sciency charts and formulas! It's an entire scam industry and this author is just like another grifter.

This book represents the collaboration of Judea Pearl, a professional expert on causality, and Dana MacKenzie, an excellent science writer who is also a mathematician. It addresses the complicated differences between attempting to truly establish that A causes B versus erroneously asserting that A and B must be cause and effect because they correlate. The book is not a quick read. But the subject is of sufficient importance to merit the effort to digest its complex analyses. The section in the book treating the subject of climate change illustrates some of the challenges facing those seeking to truly understand what we know and don't know about this issue. Other examples are drawn from the field of medical research and other disciplines. A useful book written with great intelligence.

Easy access to the ins and outs of screenwriting with the e-book bundle. He was the first one and still is the best one!The Essential Screenplay (3-Book Bundle): Screenplay: Foundations of Screenwriting, Screenwriter's Workbook, and Screenwriter's Problem Solver

Syd Field remains one of the MUST READ teachers on the art of Screenwriting! This book is a great supplement to his other books.

As a college student way back in the late 1980s, the original Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting and The Screenwriter's Workbook were my assigned textbooks and my bibles. I am forever indebted to the concepts that Syd Field put forth in those books -- it really is my "true north" when it comes to visual storytelling. And now, decades later, having these books for reference, guidance and inspiration in my Kindle library is simply fantastic. If you don't know Syd Field, this is the perfect way to be introduced to his simple and elegant screenwriting advice.

I love the 3-book bundle on my Kindle! These are a great read and it is so handy to have all three of them in one place. It's easy to pull them up and switch from book to book. They are full of so much information and are so much fun to read. Even my 13 year old daughter wants to read them when I am done.

This is THE book to read if you are serious about becoming a screenwriter. Syd Field is the original authority on this topic.
