This was a great read, and it only took a few hours. It describes the financial collapse of Icelands Banks and the downturn of the Economy in 2008. In the book the Author has requested personal reports from a selection of Icelanders who described how the collapse had affected them personally, and financially. It was indeed heartbreaking to read these reports, and impossible to not feel empathy for these victims. However it is not just these few people who were affected, in fact the whole nation and the country suffered because of this event in the history of Iceland. Up until Iceland had enjoyed good fortunes. There are hints of corruption, and of complete discontent with the Government, and of protests from in front of Álþingi (Parliament House) in Iceland. One report in the book from - a policeman gave his own story and how he needed to function as a police man, to do his job while maintaining order with protestors, and also maintain his own discontent with how this event crippled the nation, and himself personnally. I admire him for this, I dont know that I could have been calm about it. It describes how another couple had placed their finances in Ice-Save Banks, Further descriptions included how the real estate, and morgages brought financial ruin to so many people. After reading these accounts I felt sadness for these victims, and they were victims, because these events were not their own doing. The ordinary person was completely powerless it appears to me. What it does not spell out, was how the real culprits faired. I do, however, think I can guess.Get hold of this one, if you can, mine is a kindle edition.

Whilst only a short book, this provided a fascinating insight into the crisis that enveloped Iceland in 2009. It's quite a raw and honest set of interviews with a range of different people affected in different ways. I particularly liked the older mans interview and his no nonsense view on the whole episode and what it means for the country. A very interesting read which I think should be on the book list of anyone interested in the effect the crisis had on the lives of Iceland's own citizens, rather than just those who lost their savings overseas.

Alda is an insightful and entertaining writer, unafraid to write honestly and from her heart. You may agree with her opinions or not, but a well-written work is always worth the read, and Alda's books are sure-fire.

Intimate and candid views from working people affected by the Icelandic financial collapse. Interesting, informative and well written accounts of this event from people that were on the front lines.

After I read “The Little Book of the Icelanders” & “The Little Book of the Icelanders in the Old Days” I was convinced of the wonderful writing skills of the author, so I also bought this book about the economic crisis. I was looking for visions from the ordinary Icelandic people and that is exactly what this book offers you. It doesn’t matter how many documentaries, political opinions or datasheets you already saw or heard of, this book will definitely give you a total different perspective. The stories are different, but yet the same and above all still very actual on this present day.
