Interesting but rather naive. The author speaks from a high degree of wealth and privilege that may be off-putting to some readers. Many insights seem more class- than race-related.

I love/hated this book. I grew up in the South during Jim Crow, and though I believed I had overcome much of the stuff I learned growing up the book made me realize I have a long way to go. I hope it's not to late for me.

Although I have a masters degree in social work and each of our courses addressed issues of class and race, this book still helped me recognize times when I misstepped and let me anxiety about race interfere with a real connection. I think it is a helpful book for the many who may not have had a close relationship with people of color and who may need help seeing the many ways we misunderstand and disrespect them. I read this in conjunction with a study group, and the discussion was very helpful. It reads quickly and the discussion questions are useful for the group or individual contemplation.

As an African American woman I can truly say. She gets it. She really gets it. I think this is a must read for everyone.

This book is not a "problems/solutions/let's-do-better" book about racism. Instead it asks you to widen your window on YOURSELF, not because you have bad intentions, but because you grew up in a CULTURE that tilts towards white-skinned people. This culture was embedded in you, if you are white/light skinned, since you were a toddler. Until you understand this "embedment process", it will affect many of your decisions, even if you are a committed racial-equality-activist! Such an introspective examination, though often uncomfortable, is a pathway to being part of a REAL solution, instead of being part of the problem. In this dynamic, you are a participant regardless of your politics. Rarely does one get such a gift from a book. Read it, if you dare!

Excellent account of they many ways "White Privilege" is manifested every day, in every way imagined, without people being consciously aware of it.Being able to first acknowledge this fact, is an accomplishment. Beyond that, being willing to share this with the world, through this book, shows great courage, and provides a pathway to an increased understanding of this systemic practice, as it continues today.As a person of color, I don't expect "White people" to carry the burden of what started long ago. That's not what I want you to gain from reading this book. I just want you to be able to acknowledge, by God, these things really did happen; they continue to happen today; this is wrong; how can we as a nation change this...together.

Very insightful on the subject of race. Racism is often a topic that draws lines and causes people on either side to get defensive. She provides many examples that help to clarify why it takes some whites so long to understand racism and how it's imbedded into the fabric of this nation and the world (what and how we're taught about history and the fallacies that we comfortably accept). Racism is a tragedy and damages masses of people. It's great to hear someone white openly share why it takes a while to understand why and how racism exists and that it's alive and well here in America.

This topic is particularly interesting to me as a native Alabamian. This book helped me to understand the topic of white privilege better than anything else I have read because the author grew up in the South with the same prejudices that I was taught. I feel that I have a better understanding of systemic racism and its enduring effect on black people after reading this book.

I've purchased five of these Nolo books that are helpful for Landlords and they are a wealth of information specific to the topic. They are great for resources because they are carefully indexed, so you can go right to the topic you need. But, they are not bad to just read and pick up on something that you missed - especially important with deductions because you don't want to miss a thing! They aren't dry, textbook reading.All have been well organized and very helpful - as titled on my review. Also, as titled, they can overlap each other in the information covered. For example, this book and Every Landlord's Tax Deduction Guide have much of the same information. Even though they are both great books, it's likely you won't need both. I'm a relatively new landlord - okay - brand new. I believe these books have given me the foundation and supplied the information that I need to manage my business well. Tons of things I would never have dreamed of. For example, did you know that carpet was considered personal property? Neither did I! More importantly, I found out that if I bought carpet this year, because of a deduction ending in 2012, I can depreciate 50% of the cost of that improvement in one year! That's almost like getting free stuff! These books are going to save me a bundle!

I worked my way through four tax books oriented toward small businesses, and this one was the clear winner if you operate from a home office -- better even than the NOLO books ostensibly for those running a business from the home. I picked up several office-at-home deduction tips that added up to quite a bit.Good advice, clear writing.What's missing: there is not nearly enough on multi-member LLC/partnership tax tips; a few general items, but given how many small multi-member LLC's there are out there, this is a gap. There also is not any helpful information related to timing of reimbursements -- how is it handled from a tax perspective if a member purchases something in November, but doesn't submit an expense report and get reimbursement until January?I liked this one in the print edition, and decided to buy it in the kindle format to make searching easier.

It's so helpful to gain a general understanding of what you may deduct. COGS is pretty clear, we all know what goods we sell, but other areas like travel and meals deductions, office expenses, etc. are far less clear to most of us.People say, "Ask your accountant", but you are not going to ask about every little purchase you make before you make it. Much better to read this and gain an understanding for yourself.This book is detailed enough to be useful, yet simple enough for a non-CPA to understand. I buy the new edition every year.

This book is a must small business owners because it can improve their bottom line. Although it provides fairly good overview of tax deudctions, it should not be used as a comprehensive reference for tax professionals.The book is a relatively light read in a highly readable format. Each tax deduction has a good overview and a case example to boot. It isn't, however, an answer to complex tax questions which the book willingly acknowledges should be taken to a tax professional. For most business owners, this book should be sufficient for most of the tax deduction questions they may have. This book certainly answered all of mine.The book provides valuable information on the probability of an IRS audit (don't form sole proprietorship if you want to avoid an audit) and how one can minimize one's chances of an audit.

If you're a small business owner, this book is essential for planning your tax deductions for the year as well as guiding you through your tax filing. It's written in the clear language of Nolo books with a good amount of examples and easy to understand flowcharts to help you determine which deductions are applicable to your situation. I'm a big fan of Nolo and Fishman in particular.Please note that Nolo now classifies deductions into three categories:-Personal-Investment-BusinessThis book covers business deductions and not the others. Rental income falls under Investments so you will need to buy Fishman's book on deductions for landlords.

If you own a small business or are thinking about starting a small business, you MUST to read this book. It will pay for itself a thousand times. It takes a very technical and cumbersome topic and transforms it into a very well written and easy to read book. Unfortunately, taxes are a huge part of owning your own business. I have a retired IRS auditor, a CPA, and a Master of Tax working for me. But ultimately, the taxes are my responsibility. And I'm the one who's on the hook with the IRS if anything is wrong. This book gave me a very solid foundation to understanding small business tax, and allows me to have much more educated conversations with my tax advisors. I would strongly recommend this book as a starting point for anyone trying to understand small business taxes.

I have used this book as a reference. I haven't read it cover-to-cover but it has been very useful for looking up several small business tax issues with regard to deductions. I have found the Nolo books (and this one in particular) to be a big time saver and money saver versus visiting a tax advisor, accountant, or CPA for specific questions about deductions. For getting answers to some basic small business tax deductions, this is a great book. I'm very happy and it was money well spent.

Paying for It by Chester Brown is an autobiographical graphic novel that relates Mr. Brown's sex life from 1996 to 2010, which consists of his using professional female escorts for his heterosexual encounters. He mentions using masturbation to cool his ardor prior to these encounters, but provides no further details. To protect the women he changes their names and doesn't provide locations or identifying features. For those of us not familiar with sex workers or their customers, this is a chance to get a glimpse into the workings of this trade.Brown is dispassionate but clearly happy with his decision to outsource his sexual needs, feeling that sex and girlfriends do not go together well for him. The text alternates visits to various escorts with discussions with his male friends and ex-girlfriends about the advantages of his chosen sexual lifestyle. He is well-read on the politics of sex workers and takes a Libertarian position condemning the present laws restricting or outlawing sex work.The body of the book is preceded by an Introduction by Robert Crumb who calls it Mr. Brown's best work. At the end of the book there are 50 pages of Appendices and Notes that go into much deeper detail than the narrative of the book permitted. I would say that he makes as good an argument for unregulated prostitution as you will find in the popular literature.

Meet Chester Brown, a cartoonist whose girlfriend just broke up with him for another man that may or may not even be interested in her. It's at this point in his life that Brown no longer looks for "romantic love" but instead turns to prostitutes. It must be noted that when this book was written, prostitution was semi-legal in Canada. That is, as long as you didn't solicit in public or operate out of a brothel, prostitution was tolerated. A popular concept was the "outcall" where you can call an agency and have an escort show up to your room. However, we soon discover that Chester couldn't afford the girl AND the room, so he usually went for incalls, which means he went to the prostitute. (Canada has recently changed their policy on prostitution. It is legal to sell sex, but illegal to buy it.)The illustrations are unique in that Brown attempts to draw the women as they were in actuality (breast size, body type, etc.) and I found it amusing that he changed the prostitutes names even though they were fake names to begin with. Although I see why he did it - to protect their identities from anyone who may be reading the book. A lot of common scams with prostitution are depicted in the cartoons, such as the "bait and switch", which is when a girl uses a fake/outdated picture or inaccurately describes herself over the phone and then shows up at your door.Overall, it was a quick read. I found myself agreeing with most of his philosophies during the actual illustrated portion of the book, but in the appendix of the book he uses a lot of far-fetched examples (homosexual relationships, the possibility of a "gay gene", futuristic sex in 2080, etc) to get his point across. If you're interested in the sex for money business I'd give this book a look.

It's very hard to decide how many stars to rate this book, and I'm not surprised to see the customer comments all over the map. First of all, it's unusual in that it's a graphic memoir (or a "comic strip memoir" as the author prefers to call it) a relatively rare genre. Second, and more importantly, it's a book about a man who satisfies his sex drive with prostitutes, does it unapologetically--in fact you might say proudly, and chronicles his experiences with one hooker after another for several years. Third, he draws pictures of these encounters--not at all erotic by the way--and goes on in some detail as to why he prefers cash on the line encounters to romantic love. The graphic part of the book is compelling--a very fast and engaging read since we very rarely if ever hear from men about their experiences paying for sex (except, as I now know from reading this book, on sexually explicit websites reviewing hookers in various regions.) The last fifty pages of the book is a long afterword, somewhat repetitive and tedious rant why prostitution should be legalized (not merely decriminalized, but in fact treated as virtually any other employment for pay.)The author has very little emotional affect--one of his closest friends, who is a character in the comic strip, writes in the afterword "The truth is, Chester seems to have a very limited emotional range compared to most people. There does seem to be something wrong with him. He's definitely an oddball. That said, he is also the kindest, gentlest and most deeply thoughtful oddball I know." He writes about these women as if they were merely useful only in terms of satisfying his sexual drive, while at the same time he remains loyal to his prostitutes, for the most part. And he actually falls for one of them toward the end, although "falls for" may be a bit too strong. He speaks about most of these women almost exclusively in terms of their relative attractiveness and he seems to prefer women half his age or less, breast size optional, weight below average. Nonetheless, you get a surprisingly human sense of the women after you get into the book, and you certainly have to admire Brown's honesty and straightforwardness. I'd recommend this for its sheer originality, as well as for Brown's healthy disdain for political correctness.

I love the simple style of Brown's illustrations and the point of view that he uses to approach the world. I get the feeling Brown is either a huge nerd, or somewhere on the Asberger's scale, because a lot of his interactions with people are quite awkward. In order to avoid girlfriend-awkwardness, he starts seeing escorts.His philosophical arguments supporting prostitution are well-considered and very persuasive. However, the majority of the book is NOT boring philosophy but rather little vignettes of his visits to whores. I like the intimacy and strangeness of each of these meetings.

I really can't say anything bad about this incredible book...other than that it's kind of slow at a few points. But, seriously, I finished it within a couple of days (and that's with a busy schedule). To anyone who has dealt with a history of sexual abuse, it hits close to home. I will be honest. I first picked up this book when I was in high school. It hit way too close to home. I put it back down and then picked it back up several years later and started from the beginning, assuring myself that it was okay to feel connected to it. But that just proves how well written it is. The ending actually came as a huge shock to me. So far, it's my favorite ending to any of her books, and I've read (and own) almost all of them. Definitely worth buying. And to anyone who is currently dealing with sexual abuse, please, seek help because it's never too late. Maybe this book will encourage more people to do just that.

Anything Ellen Hopkins is my favorite. She is always able to suck you into her books and you can never put them down. She is able to capture the heartache and struggles of each different character; even though each one struggles in a different way. The ending of this book was a complete shock to me. She had me at the edge of my seat until the end!!

This book was hard to read due to content matter, it truly upset me for a few days. However, the author is such a skilled writer and she draws you in. I have read several of her other books. The plot twist at the end of this book made me exclaim out loud. I was not expecting it at all.

I stopped reading 100 or so pages in as it became pretty clear what the “twist” was going to turn out to be (and sadly verified although I really wanted to be wrong) - this book is apparently aimed at young adults so it’s very PG 13 and written in a very bizarre prose style format with the words forming various shapes on the page - really disappointed

I had never used an audio book before and didn't quite know what to expect. I was a little taken aback when it arrived and contained 8 CD disks. I worried that I would not have time to listen to them, and worse, that I would not really be able to hear what the author wrote. As a result, I bought the hardback edition of the book, feeling that maybe I would be able to read the story.I discovered that the book is written in an unusual manner. It is sort of a free flowing poetry that is almost like a diary or an assignment from an English class in high school. That wasn't working, so I took out the CD's and started listening to them.I was impressed by the reader, who captured the nuances of the characters quite well. The story flowed more easily than when I tried to read it and I was able to dig in and really get into the story...so much so that I almost missed picking up my wife at the airport terminal.The story is dark about a family that is quite dysfunctional. There is graphic language, and the content can be rather raw, but there is nothing here that you won't hear or hear about on any high school campus in the country. It is well written, captivating and shines an interesting light on the subjects (incest, cutting, drugs) that it deals with.I recommend it in audio form, but would have trouble recommending the written form. I'm not sure how many teens would wade through the free flowing verse

This is a good book! It IS rather dark though, and deals with some tough issues- sexual abuse, rape, molestation. So, if any of these are triggers for you, please don’t risk it. It was tough to read at times, for me, because of these issues. With that being said, it is a good read, very suspenseful and has some unexpected twists for sure.

I have yet to finish this book, but I'm halfway through and this book is amazing. It tugs at your heartstrings and is written beautifully and creatively. As far as quality, it couldn't be better. I had not a single scratch, dent, or tear in my book when it arrived.

At first I was ready to delete this book. The style is unusual to say the least. But I read the reviews and they said just keep reading and I did. Then I couldn’t put the crazy book down! Well done!

I'm certainly no student of ancient history, regardless I found Jeff Champion's chronology of the Successor Wars to be an engaging read. I guess heaps of political intrigue, war and Machiavellian treachery make for a rather engaging history lesson.This chronicle is based on ancient narratives from the period written by Diodorus, Justin and others which Champion is careful to note are apocryphal and therefore not perfect records of events. However, collectively these documents tell a reasonably accurate story of the times and it is quite a story. Some of the shenanigans described would seem perfectly at home in today's tabloids. Sex, murder and political double crossing were apparently as common then as they are today.This is a painless history lesson for would be historians since the author has done all of the heavy lifting for the reader and we get to enjoy a very user friendly narrative about the ancient world just after the death of Alexander the Great. Enjoy!

This is a well-written account of the career of one of Alexander's successors. The history of the fifty years or so after Alexander's death is fascinating, although our understanding of this period is incomplete due to the limited number of surviving sources; nonetheless, the author does a good job piecing together what is known, but also describes what is not known, and provides plausible theories about what happened during the gaps.Because there is very little information about administrative matters, etc, this book focuses on military and diplomatic topics, and provides good accounts (including maps) of most of the battles. The author also does a good job of describing the ever-shifting diplomatic status, as kings, generals, cities, wives, etc. changed sides, and then changed sides again. And again... The ever-shifting balance of power is one of the things that make this era so interesting.Finally, the author also includes an appendix which describes and critiques the various surviving ancient sources, including which sources are believed to be based on which other sources, etc. Pretty helpful and interesting.Overall, a highly recommended book about a fascinating historical figure and era.

After unexpected death of Alexander the Great of Macedon, his generals and friends quickly divided his empire in order to carve newly created states for themselves. Although some generals tried to preserve the empire unity (not for Alexander's son, but rather for themselves), they all failed because there was no second Alexander among them.This book is devoted to the life, career and death of one of such generals - Antigonus the One-Eyed. When the main Macedonian army moved to Persian proper and India, Antigonus was left in Asia Minor to guard communications between the rapidly advancing army and Europe (Macedon, Greece) from where reinforcements were arriving. At this post, he distinguished himself and it is not surprising that after Alexander's death in Babilon he was able to claim a sizeable portion of the empire for himself.Being not content with what he obtained, he carried the grand design to unite pieces of the empire and to rule it as a king equal in glory to Alexander himself. However, other rulers were also ambitious and the wars between them and Antigonus waged for many years till Antigonus was overpowered and killed in the battle of Ipsus largely due to the gravest mistake of his favorite son and heir, Demetrius (who himself was not a bad general at all) who while pursuing the enemy went too far from the main battle field and as a result he was cut off from the rest of Antigonus' forces by adversaries' elephants and was unable to come to rescue to his farther.This book is very entertaining and without dry scientific jargon. Before reading it, I had a very different opinion about Antigonus, but Jeff Champion "championed" Antigonus in my eyes. It turned out that Antigonus was a skillful general and able ruler, and, of course, the brave man who being 81 years old, died fighting.

I liked this book a lot, and have enjoyed other books on Classical subjects from the same publisher. Reading this book made me dig deeper into the Successors, the (almost exclusively) Macedonian warlords who fought each other for forty-odd years before the last of them (Seleucus) died as he had lived, by the sword. Antigonus was one of the first to go, and in retrospect he was a failure. He had a huge chunk of Alexander's empire, and he lost it all by trying to grab the lot, thereby uniting the other Successors against him. He died in battle, and his son (another Successor) barely escaped to live to fight another day (eventually his son, Antigonus's grandson, became King of Macedonia, founding a dynasty that survived over a century until it ran afoul of the Romans). However, this book makes it clear that he had no reason to settle for part of the prize. Everyone was going for broke, except Ptolemy, who made himself the King of Egypt and founded a dynasty that outlived all of the other Macedonian royal houses and ended with Cleopatra of Antony and Cleopatra fame. Looking at it now, Ptolemy was the smartest of the Successors. Seleucus was the luckiest of the Successors. But I will agree with the title of this book, and declare Antigonus the greatest of the Successors. A great general, a wise ruler, a loving father, and a man with a sense of humor (as seen in Plutarch's biography of his son Demetrius) - Antigonus is worth getting to know, and I recommend this book as a good way to do it. I entitled my review "More Interesting than Alexander," and I meant it. Alexander overthrew one empire in a couple of battles, and never lived to rule it. Antigonus, Ptolemy, Seleucus, and the rest fought, schemed, double-crossed, triumphed, lost, ruled, and murdered for decades, and truly created the Hellenistic East. They deserve to be better remembered.
