Review

"The illustrations are a very strong part of this book. They are well conceived, always to the point, and in color. One interesting editorial feature is the so-called ‘Key Points,’ boxes that interrupt the text with a framed statement emphasizing a single important aspect. In addition, the book has very good bibliographical notes, which are extremely rare in this type of publication. Each chapter is followed by an extensive list of relevant citations, often with accompanying explanations…Overall, the book is very enlightening and engineers can learn a lot from it."--Computing Reviews.com, December 28, 2012 "Embedded Systems Security provides real-world examples of risk and exploitation; most importantly the book offers clear insight into methods used to counter vulnerabilities to build true, native security into technology."--Adriel Desautels, President and CTO, Netragard, LLC "Written by leading authorities on security in embedded systems (a lead designer of an NSA certified cryptographic system and a lead developer on the single highest rated software product in the Common Criteria security certification rating system), this book provides an overview of security principles, vulnerability concerns and applicable technologies. Real world examples of system weakness and exploitation illustrate the need for security in development and give practical advice for effective techniques to counteract threats. Areas addressed include data protection protocols, emerging embedded systems, networking, cryptography, system architecture, hypervisors, operating systems and storage."--Reference and Research Book News, August 2012, page 186

The second half of the book dealing with pure cryptographic topics seems to have been written in a different style which made the book very attractive as a read - very informative and educational and so a great set of chapters to read (Chapters 4 and 5). The book is worth the purchase for those chapters alone. Chapters 1-3 had good parts and bad parts, there was some good educational material in there but it was really spoilt by stabs at competing vendors needlessly. Honestly Id rather not have read those parts because they had less to do with the technical and more to do with marketing and competitive advertising in them. In summary Id would buy the book for chapters 4 and 5.There is a very minor nit in that when I read the book in the amazon previewer it was in color - the actual book in paper form is rather less than flattering black and white with grey scale which really ruins the reading experience. I do like the illustrations and they were done with some obvious love and care and are worth looking at during the reading experience in color - they enhance the experience in my humble opinion.

99% of all processors don't run Windows or Unix - they're the embedded processors in your sewing machine, computer keyboard, thermostat, or car airbags. Even so, 99% of all operating systems books focus on big OSs like those, with little mention of the embedded and real-time OSs that surround us. Likewise 99% of all computer security books focus on big OSs like those. Attackers aren't so narrow-minded, though, and demonstrated by Mirai and Stuxnet. This book does an outstanding job of widening the focus of computing security. It emphasizes the safety-criticality of some embedded systems, like the ones in an insulin pump or anti-lock brake system - the kind of systems that can kill people if they misbehave (or are maliciously directed to misbehave). Although this book stresses resistance to attack, authorization, and information release, a very large part of this discussion talks about program correctness. That certainly makes sense, becauseA) so many attacks enter systems through buggy software, like buffer over-run vulnerabilities, andB) if a bug is when a program behaves in ways that violate specifications (even implicit ones), behavior of a compromised system is certainly a bug.I've found a few things to disagree with, except for one blooper (below). Admittedly, many embedded developers will find material here outside of their needs. Well, "embedded systems" cover a very large range, so that's hardly a surprise. I recommend this for its breadth, and for its attention to details of RTOS behavior that other books skip over. Truly, a valuable resource. The only conspicuous blooper I found was on p.252, regarding ring oscillators built from chains of "not" gates. Fig 4.29 shows a ring [so-called] oscillator built from two "not" gates. I think the usual name for this circuit is a 'latch'. Ring oscillators oscillate with odd numbers of not/nand gates. An even number of not/nand gates will sit quietly and happily with an exact alternation of 1 and 0 outputs, all the way down to the n=2 case. N=2 is called a static RAM cell.Outside of that, and outside of material beyond my current interests, it's all good.-- wiredweird

I have been designing and implementing security products for about 7+ years now (embedded systems for 12yrs) to "high assurance" standards and I have to say these authors have done a great job with this book. I usually don't like to buy books that have not been heavily rated yet, but with security books you don't want a 10 year old book (unless maybe it is cryptography!) if you want something that is relevant. That is why I am taking the time to rate this book. I encourage anyone considering this book to buy it right now. The issues and technologies are relevant and the authors have done a great job putting this together. I am very experienced in this area, but I think it is a pretty easy read... that being said I have only got through the first three chapters so far so I will update this if I change my mind!UPDATE: I finished this book about a week ago and I still recommend it. However I will say it is a bit slanted toward Green Hills... probably has to do with the author's close relationship with them! (I'll let you look it up). So read with that in mind. You see a similar slant/sales job in the model driven design (MDD) section that was written by another person with a company that sells a tool for MDD. I would say read the content and get out the security concepts without taking too much stock in how it may reflect on a competiting vendor products.I also want to add that as far as the "Embedded Cryptography" section of the book... it is nice to have in the book but if you want to learn about cryptography there are much better sources out there. This book isn't meant to just be a source for crypto so it makes sense but just want to make the readers aware. Some suggestions for a starter book that is "Applied Cryptography" by Schenier. Another great book that includes the mathematical basis is "Understanding Cryptorgraphy" by Paar and Pelzl. The nice thing about "Understanding Cryptorgraphy" is it doesn't require you to delve into the math but makes it available. So it is suitable for a novice and the experienced. There are also follow on books like "Practical Cryptography" by Ferguson and Scheneir that are really good, but I would suggest reading this one after one of the other two mentioned above. If you like a bit of history (which I don't generally, but really liked this book anyway) I also suggest "The Code Book" which is different from the former two in that it reads more like a story of crypto and its evolution with interesting insight on how ciphers have been broken and how new ciphers have been developed as opposed to just a focus on explanation of modern types of ciphers and specific cipher algorithms. Another book by Kahn call "The Codebreakers" has a lot of crypto history but the book is HUGE and, in my opinion, boring. I didn't get too far into "The Codebreakers" before I gave it away!

Great care was taken by the author and the publishers--and by their sponsor, Oak Spring Foundation--to publish this wonderful partial inventory of the great books of botanic illustration in the Library at Oak Spring, an estate that was gifted to posterity by Rachel Lambert Mellon. This review of the extraordinary Oak Spring Library of original florilegium (books on flowers by the greatest botanic illustrators of history) is done magnificently using fine papers and inks. Thus the production of this book on books is carefully and thoughtfully done. The book reviews are well written and thorough, and the Reader will be pleased to find excellent reproductions of select prints from these important books in color. This reader, knowledgeable on this subject, saw reproductions in this book that are from books he has only read about but not seen. This was a most pleasant surprise, and for this, we are grateful.Clearly, Rachel Lambert Mellon has assembled a magnificent legacy--obtaining what I thought were the unobtainable in the botanic literature. This book is a testament and is a must have for those who are assembling their own library.By combining this book with the fine Taschen publication, THE GARDEN OF EDEN--the inventory of the botanic collection in the Austrian National Library--the collector of botanic illustration will have an excellent survey of the primary sources in this field. I should note that the Garden of Eden is by the noted Professor Doctor H.Walter Lack of Berlin.

A beautiful book on the amazing library of Mrs. Paul Mellon.

Informative and brilliant illustrations.

The hardcover version of this book has a few lines about the author on the inside cover. I find it interesting that this is a book about a Catholic saint meanwhile the author flaunts his gay lifestyle on the inside cover. The writing and illustrations are great.

This book is by no means religious. I was disappointed that there was only one line mentioning that Saint Valentine was a priest. The story also ended very abruptly. I realize it was written for children and is unpleasant that this holy man was killed, but he is a martyr. We teach children from a young age that Christ was put to death, so it makes sense that many of His followers were also. Especially now, with Christians all over the world being persecuted and executed for their faith, mentioning his martyrism would be appropriate. I bought for my 6 yr old Goddaughter, still waiting to hear if she enjoyed the book.

Wonderful book to introduce children to the roots of St. Valentine's Day. Perhaps qualifies as historical fiction, but well based on facts known. We have used the book to remind the children that Christians originally spent St. Valentine's Day in prayer for martyrs - not for sending love notes and chocolates. They also enjoy looking for glimpses of modern day Valentine traditions: notes, flowers, kindness. The mosaic illustrations are beautiful reminders of the ancient Rome in which Valentine lived.

We used this book in our homeschool as part of Valentine's Day study. The illustrations are beautiful! The story is age appropriate for 2nd grade and under (Valentine's execution is simply alluded to, it's up to the parent how detailed to get into that). Also good if you're Catholic or Protestant...no mention of canonization in the story itself, so it's up to the parents to go in depth on that issue. Nicely done for a broad audience.

The mosaic style of the illustrations casts the mind back to yesteryear even without reading the story. For those who know and love the tale of St Valentine, who was historically a martyr of the early Church in Rome, this book presents a basic overview of his story for young readers without upsetting them with the details of the harsh reality.

I like that this book gives an overview of who St Valentine was, the milieu in which he lived, and how the tradition of exchanging valentines began. It is not too simplistic, but neither is it too deep or heavy for a very young audience. The illustrations did not particularly excite me - I read it aloud to 20 homeschooled children ages 2-9 and the art did not seem to excite them much either! I would have appreciated a more explicit emphasis on the holiness of the man! Sabuda concentrates on St Valentine's profession as a doctor - the fact that he was a priest is downplayed and his prayer life is as well. I have been doing some on-the-spot editing as I read aloud to my 4 children to put a little more emphasis on his priesthood and sanctity.

Reading Level: 5.4*SPOILER ALERT*Valentine is a doctor who works for whatever his patient can afford which sometimes is nothing at all. However, he hides a dark secret: instead of following the Pope, he is a Priest of the Christian faith. One day, a jailer brings his blind daughter to him for assistance. Valentine refuses payment as he cannot guarantee that his treatment will work. His faith ultimately leads to his death when the Emperor orders that Christians be executed. The jailer comes to visit and says there is nothing he can do to help. He sends a letter home with him to his daughter that simply reads "from your Valentine" along with a Crocus. The child can see the flower for the first time and realizes she is cured. A historical note at the end of the story details the reason behind Valentine's death, his rise to Sainthood, and how the holiday came to be.My OpinionI am always leery of religious materials in the classroom but the religious aspect was more of a side note relating to the reason for his death rather than an emphasize of the book. The tile mosaic pictures are interesting and colorful. Due to its length, the book can be read in its entirety very quickly. 'I like lots of details and would have liked to see more in the story. I think this is a great read-aloud story for 1-3 graders; the vocabulary is too difficult for them to read on their own. When I read this with my 4&5 graders, they thought the story was merely okay. We used cut-up paint chips (free from Home Depot, etc) to create mosaic valentine pictures that came out cute as an extension to the story.

Well done, art work is capturing. Good introduction to St. V. MY only wish is that it told a more complete story of his works ie., his refusal to obey the law that banned anyone from contracting marriage. His steadfast willingness to put himself in harms way so that new families through holy matrimony might be formed. Seems particularly relevant for today. However, I think anytime you can find a book that makes a saint "real" to children you've found a keeper and this book does that.

Review

“Tour de France 100 is the most beautiful book about cycling you will ever see! The photos are simply stunning. Even though I’ve read dozens of books about the Tour de France, this book has a lot of photos I’ve never seen published anywhere before.” — All Seasons Cyclist “Were Tour de France 100 a slide show, Moore’s text would make for the perfect narration, reminding us of the storylines that dominated each year’s race. He not only covers the racing action, he brings in the present…” — Red Kite Prayer “If you're looking for one on the greatest race of them all, you need look no further than Tour de France 100. The photography is stunning and leaves no stone unturned.” — Active.com “In conveying the epic scale of the Tour, Tour de France 100 is aided by its size: in a world in which so many things are being shrunk to pocket-size, [the book is] serving up the equivalent of a sixty inch plasma screen. The large format allows for the detail in the photographs to tell their own stories.” — Podium Café “A wonderful pictorial history of the race. The images are beautifully and imaginatively laid out, with a little under 250 large-scale pages that capture the race in all its guises.” — Wheelsuckers “There is such great depth in the writing that you will not simply thumb through the book and be done with it, but will instead be drawn in by the stories being well-told.” — Bike Rumor “Great pictures and great stories on the history of the Grand Boucle. Enjoying the stories and photos in Tour de France 100 can only increase your love of the sport. A must have.” — USCyclingReport.com “Super-large format, the pictures are beautifully presented. A good coffee table photo book with a good balance between action and reaction shots.” — Podium Cafe Praise for Richard Moore's book Slaying the Badger ""[Slaying the Badger is] a gripping narrative of this psychological and physical three-week war."" — Wall Street Journal “Rich in drama and emotion. As racing books go, Moore’s book just might be the greatest ever.” — Outside magazine

From the Back Cover

The Tour de France, first staged in 1903, is the world’s greatest sports spectacle, packed with heart-stopping drama, legendary rivalries, bitter tragedy, and outright farce. In its 100 runnings—the race was interrupted twice by war—it has cast its spotlight on some of the greatest athletes of all time, who fought their way across France’s magnificent landscape in pursuit of victory and the yellow jersey worn by the Tour’s overall leader. In Tour de France 100, award-winning journalist Richard Moore celebrates all that is great, fantastic, amusing, outrageous, and overwhelming in the Tour through illuminating text and a cascade of defining images from the race’s extraordinary history. Vividly reproduced photos abound of heroes of the race, from pioneers like Octave Lapize and Eugène Christophe—first to wear the yellow jersey—to legendary warriors like Eddy Merckx and Miguel Indurain. The great battles—Fausto Coppi versus Gino Bartali, Greg LeMond versus Bernard Hinault—are richly told, as is the shocking death of Tom Simpson and the controversial disgrace of Lance Armstrong. And the high drama of the modern era, represented by super-sprinter Mark Cavendish and the droll Bradley Wiggins, is fully covered as well. There is nothing else that compares to the Tour, and Tour de France 100 is a superb celebration, as well as a keepsake of the Tour’s 100th edition that will be treasured by all cyclists and bike racing fans.

I'm a cyclist and a Tour de France junkie so naturally I had to order this book. This one is going to go on the coffee table for sure so that everyone can look at it. All of the eras are covered which is nice. It is also indeed up to date all the way through the 2012 tour. The book is divided by eras. Each section has a text describing the major events that went on during that era (including the controversial ones like Tom Simpson or Lance). I haven't seen a lot of these photos before elsewhere so it does feel like I purchased something unique and new that I didn't have before. When I received it, I ended up going through the whole thing at one sitting.I find it's also been very helpful when I'm trying to answer something about the Tour to my "civilian" (read: non-cycling) friends.

gave it to my husband for Christmas. He loved it. I'm a cyclist too, so, I'm looking forward to sitting down and enjoying this.

This is a wonderfully produced book that provides the historical context through which we can view the modern race. The book gave me an appreciation for the challenges faced by the first tour cyclists, and how, despite advancements in equipment, nutrition, and training, fundamental aspects of endurance cycling has remained unchanged.

This book definitely gets you excited about the tour de France. The photos remind you of the long history of the race. One of my favorite coffee table books!

A beautiful and substantial book. Perfect gift for the cycling and TdF addict...

aok

He loved the book. It was a gift

It was a gift for my son in law and he said it is beautiful!

This book is a revival of the soda fountains that occurred during the Prohibition years. A man who was on a mission to open a soda fountain shop that introduces how to make a egg cream and many other favorites making his own organic syrups, fudge sauces and other baked goods to the public. Excellent book how the history of the soda jerk and soda fountain came to be from the 1890s to 1940s. When you are in New York, visit Brooklyn Farmacy and experience the drinks, history and the food experience and culture of the Soda Fountain has revived in modern times.

This book was a great blend of soda fountain history and recipes for making your own. There's plenty of pictures and interesting tidbits, and the recipes seem solid. It's picture heavy, so I would recommend reading it on a color device, or getting a paper copy.

Glad I got this on BookBub for 99 cents. Hardly worth the download time. Recipes not as presented in description.

Women in Science is a biography book written and illustrated by Rachel Ignotofsky. The book explores some of the essential and amazing discoveries made by women who were pioneers in their fields of expertise. The book also gives the reader some background about the lives of these women. There are some of the world's most well-known women scientists such as Jane Goodall as well as lesser-known women such as Florence Bascomb. There are all types of scientists in this book, from archaeologists to geologists and physicists. The book begins with some explanatory material about the reality of the times in which these women lived. For example, bans on women in medical and graduate school and public ridicule. The writing is complemented by somewhat whimsical illustrations that add to the fun yet educational nature of the book.My only issue was that the pages are "busy", which can make it difficult to focus. The font size is also small, which might just be a function of my myopic eyeballs. However, the book got physically hard to read after a while due to the business of the pages and the small font size. Content-wise, this book is great and could inspire school age girls to learn more about these great women.Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for writing an honest review. I did not receive any other compensation.

Praise goes to Rachel Ignotofsky for assembling these tributes to important women in science. There is much that is good about the book and its biographies, but many aspects of the design detract from its message. The fanciful caricatures become monotonous after awhile. The interesting facts sprinkled around the ‘portraits’ and in the margins are a distraction from the main articles that are difficult to read anyway owing to the small print. The science is occasionally oversimplified into serious inaccuracy. Many of the definitions in the glossary are misleading and incomplete, wrong, or introduce terms incorrectly, sometimes not otherwise defined; some seem to be partially extracted from wikipedia without a full understanding of the science. So let the reader beware.

This is an absolutely fantastic book! I got it as a present for a toy drive for a pre-teen girl and I am thinking of getting one for all the women and girls I know of all ages. The artwork is wonderful and the information is presented concisely but entertainingly. It's not an encyclopedia with an extremely detailed outline of each experiment conducted by each woman, but the information is fascinating and can inspire a young mind to investigate further.

I bought this for my second-grade daughter who loves science. At first glance she was turned off by the small type but a few minutes later came back and wanted me to read with her. For an elementary schooler it will likely be a read together book for a while. Which is fine since we've just read a few pages and it opened up opportunities to discuss all sorts of things, about science and society, and piqued our interest to look up additional pictures and facts on the Internet. I am learning too! And it is a beautiful book to hold and look at.

We have been building a collection of female empowering books for our 7 year old. Amoung our favorites is this one. I even bought a copy for her 2nd grade teacher to have in the classroom. Some others in our collection include:-“Women in Sports: 50 Fearless Athletes Who Played to Win”-“Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls”-“Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls 2”-“Ruth Bader Ginsburg: The Case of R.B.G. vs. Inequality”-“Why We March: Signs of Protest and Hope--Voices from the Women's March” (we marched in DC so she loved having this book)-“The Pink Hat”

I read this book in combination with Catherine Thimmesh's Girls Think of Everything, regretting that civilization has not as yet reached a point when achievements no longer need be identified as gender-specific. Be that as it may, both books provide valuable information and insights about creative thinking.Rachel Ignotofsky focuses on 50 "fearless pioneers" during a time frame that extends from Hypatia (350-370 CE-415 CE [?]) until Maryam Mirzakhani (1977-2017). Women in the United States were not permitted to vote until 1920 and access to higher education was denied -- or at least severely limited -- to women who wanted to pursue a degree in medicine or in the STEM fields: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Moreover, resistance to women's personal growth and professional development has been even wider and deeper in most other countries. These are among the mini-profiles of "fearless pioneers" that are of greatest interest and value to me:o Ada Lovelace (1815-1852): Mathematician,; collaborator with Charles Babbage on first computer programo Elizabeth Blackwell (1821-1910): Physician; founder of several medical societies in U.S. and Englando Alice Ball (1892-1916): Chemist; developed a new treatment of leprosy victims throughout the worldo Marie Curie (1867-1934): Physicist and chemist; Nobel laureate (twice)o Barbara McClintock (1902-1992): Cytogeneticist; revised views of evolution and botany; Nobel laureateo Grace Hopper (1906-1992): Navy admiral and computer scientist; invented first compilero Rachel Carson (1907-1964): Marine biologist and conservationist; author of the Silent Springo Hedy Lamarr (1914-2000): Inventor and film actress; developed frequency-hopping spread system (FHSS) used in smartphones, GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth deviceso Katherine Johnson (1918- ): Physicist and mathematician calculated trajectories for NASA; featured in the book and film, Hidden Figureso Jane Goodall (1934- ): Primatologist, ethologist, and anthropologist; renowned for research on chimpanzeeso Valentina Tereshkova (1937- ): Engineer and Cosmonaut; first woman to travel in outer space; orbited Earth 48 times in Vostok VIo Elizabeth Blackburn (1948- ): Molecular biologist; invented telomarase (enzyme that builds telomeres); Nobel Laureateo Maye Jemison (1956- ): Astronaut, educator, and physician; first African-American woman in outer space; founder and CEO of several corporationsRachel Ignotofsky concludes, "The women in this book prove to the world that no matter your gender, your race, or your background, anyone can achieve great things. Their legacy lives on. Today, women all over the world are still risking everything to discover and explore."Let us celebrate these trailblazers so we can inspire the next generation. Together, we can pick up where they left off, and continue the search for knowledge."So go out and tackle new problems, find your answers, and learn everything you can to make your own discoveries!"That is her challenge to the young women who read this book but it is also a challenge to others -- parents, other family members, teachers, coaches, and clergy -- who can support their efforts. I also urge those young women to keep in mind this valuable insight from Eleanor Roosevelt: "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

Review

"Superb. . . . Augustus is a first-rate popular biography by a skilled and knowing hand, a fine companion to Goldsworthy’s Caesar."—Steve Donoghue, Washington Post"Impressive . . . Mr. Goldsworthy . . . moves nimbly around other important evidence about Augustus’ life . . . The resulting life is, in one sense, deeply unified. This is a welcome corrective to traditional presentations."—Brendan Boyle, Wall Street Journal"Goldsworthy's true expertise is as a military historian, and this is what really gives his biography its strength and bite: his depiction of Augustus's relationship with his legions is masterly."—Robert Harris, London Sunday Times"Goldsworthy capably guides us over the rapids of 'modern scholarship.' He challenges stories that are repeated often but never questioned, . . . [and] is particularly sound on senatorial power struggles and the use of marriage to cement or break political alliances. . . . [Augustus] is the most trustworthy [portrait] we are likely to get."—Nicholas Shakespeare, Daily Telegraph"[Goldsworthy,] the author of the best-selling Caesar: The Life of a Colossus, . . . relates [Augustus’] military victories, the hairbreadth escapes, the diplomatic successes and the dark family quarrels with a storyteller’s brio, bringing alive the empire’s tense standoffs with Eastern kingdoms such as Parthia and along the way giving us some quite wonderful readings of poets such as Virgil and Horace. . . . [Goldsworthy’s] insights and inferences are superb throughout. . . . Augustus is a first-rate popular biography by a skilled and knowing hand, a fine companion to Goldsworthy’s Caesar volume."—Steve Donoghue, Washington Post"Historian and biographer Goldsworthy (Caesar) showcases his deep knowledge of Ancient Rome in this masterful document of a life whose themes still resonate in modern times. . . . A strong narrative emphasis ties the work together and is enriched by evocative details of Roman life. . . . The overall effect that Goldsworthy generates is of meeting a man whose life seems hardly distant from the modern experience. While ancient cultural practices can often feel foreign, the political motivations and machinations, the familial relations and emotions, ring as true today as at the turn of the Common Era."—Publishers Weekly, starred review"Goldsworthy’s prodigious biography of this first and greatest Roman emperor is thorough and well-researched. . . . Goldsworthy is a superb historian and talented writer, . . . [and Augustus] will likely join the pantheon of biographies of a truly great Roman leader. . . . Goldsworthy reminds readers . . . that human nature does not change. Augustus cultivated what passed for the Roman media as assiduously as any American politician today woos Fox News or CNN. One gets the impression that Augustus would have adapted well to 21st-century politics while still ruling wisely."—Gary Anderson, Washington Times"The dramatic rise and long rule of Caesar Augustus is the subject of Adrian Goldsworthy’s substantial new biography, Augustus: First Emperor of Rome. The book is a fascinating study of political life in ancient Rome, and the parallels with our own political system are numerous and interesting. But the discontinuities between America and the Roman Empire are just as revealing."—Nick Romeo, Christian Science Monitor"In too many of the numerous histories of this period, Augustus as an individual is blurred, if not overlooked, as strange as that may seem. Goldsworthy’s goal is to rescue the life of Augustus from the history, limning the passions, cruelty, and wiliness that made up that often-dismissed character. . . . Adrian Goldsworthy’s fine new biography tells the founder’s story as it deserves to be told."—Michael Auslin, National Review Online"Goldsworthy (Caesar: Life of a Colossus, 2008, etc.) obviously has ancient Rome in his bones, and his biography of Augustus is also a solid chronicle of Rome and its development. . . . Goldsworthy questions why Augustus has slipped off of many historians' lists of great leaders, which include Julius Caesar, Alexander, Hannibal and Hadrian. He provides plenty of reasons why he should be at the top of those lists."—Kirkus Reviews"Augustus is the greatest ancient Roman leader, . . . and yet, [he is] something of an enigma. Adrian Goldsworthy’s wonderful biography will change all that. Augustus is revealing of its subject’s character and the time in which he lived, judicious on his shortcomings, and rich in portraits of secondary figures—everything a biography should be. . . . Augustus is the best sort of biography because it inspires readers to make these comparisons [between ancient times and our own], without making them explicit. It deserves wide readership, and, in the best way, demonstrates the truth of Petrarch’s famous query: 'What else is all history, but the praise of Rome?'"—Ted Lawrence, Washington Free Beacon"Adrian Goldsworthy has done it again. His biography of Augustus, just released by Yale University Press, is the most balanced and nuanced explanation of how Augustus succeeded. . . . The book  reads like a novel in part, perhaps, because, having written several novels, Goldsworthy has learned to think about motivation. He is clearly the best Roman historian of our day."—Martin Lobel, PhDiva.com"An absolutely must read for Roman history fans and students of the Julio-Claudians."—NS Gill’s Ancient Matters"The 2,000th anniversary of the death of Augustus has renewed interest in the man regarded as the founder of the Roman Empire and its first emperor. With a canny sense for timing, acclaimed military historian Adrian Goldsworthy has published a new biography of this important, and still controversial, historical figure. . . . Goldsworthy presents the known facts of the life of the enigmatic and complex Augustus evenhandedly. He admirably charts the events of his rise to power, revealing him variously as a second-rate military commander, clever manipulator, confident showman and consummate politician."—Lindsay Powell, UNRV"A biography that can interest scholars, but also be read with ease by anyone interested in the ancient world. Goldsworthy has an unusual ability to make his detailed histories readable and interesting to a general audience, and that is a rare talent. I recommend it very highly."—Richard Weigel, Bowling Green [KY] Daily NewsWon an Honorable Mention for the 2014 American Publishers Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence (PROSE) in the Biography & Autobiography category"Goldsworthy peers like a master jeweler into the strange cold diamond at the heart of Roman history—the emperor Augustus—and reveals the whole Roman world reflected in its facets. But the book itself is warm with human sympathy, elegant writing, and the sheer joy and love of history it evokes in its reader."—J. E. Lendon, author of Soldiers and Ghosts: A History of Battle in Classical Antiquity and Song of Wrath: The Peloponnesian War Begins"Goldsworthy has produced an elegantly written and well-argued biography of Augustus that pulls no punches. Sifting through the literature of the Augustan Age, he brings together the ancient evidence with the best of modern scholarship, producing a meticulously researched, but highly readable, volume on Rome’s first emperor. The result is a study on the nature of leadership, the wielding of power, and the price to be paid by both."—Col. Rose Mary Sheldon, Virginia Military Institute"For all his importance, Augustus is often an enigma behind a classical façade. Goldsworthy’s Augustus reveals all the drama and detail surrounding Rome’s first emperor. Brimming with energy, scholarship, and wisdom, it is a history book to savor."—Barry Strauss, author of Masters of Command: Alexander, Hannibal, Caesar and the Genius of Leadership"Augustus splendidly completes the trilogy that started with Caesar and continued with Antony and Cleopatra. It is the best extended treatment in English of Augustus' career and his many contradictions."—Karl Galinsky, University of Texas at Austin

Adrian Goldsworthy has once again justified his reputation as the preeminent Roman historian of his generation in Augustus. The book reads like a novel. The characters are nuanced, the complexities of Roman civilization and the interconnections of the first families explored, along with a handy genealogy chart at the end. He in punctilious about his sources and admits where the evidence is questionable. Augustus was much more of a political genius than a military one, but knew his limitations and attracted those who could fill in his gaps, like Agrippa who was an excellent general. It is fascinating to watch Augustus change from someone who killed without remorse in his younger days to a mature ruler who learned to use his enemies, rather than kill them. If you are really interested in how the Roman Republic was transformed into the Roman Empire, this book is essential, as, I might add, are Goldsworthy's earlier books on Caesar, How Rome Fell and Anthony and Cleopatra. Although Goldsworthy cautions about making predictions about our own society based on what happened to the Romans, the similarities are all too striking.

Augustus has always fascinated me, ever since I saw I Claudius as a child. His adopted father Julius Caesar gets most of the attention but in many ways Augustus was the more successful of the two and as a Roman emperors go one of the greatest. Yet, there are very few books on Augustus. I picked this up after reading the author’s previous book on Caesar. I loved that book, I thought he did an excellent job of seeing through some of the “accepted wisdom” of previous historians always with an eye toward objectivity and this book was the same. It reads like a novel, it’s one of those books I just couldn’t put down, yet it’s also diligent in providing references and presenting alternative views toward an issue. If you are looking for a good book written for a general audience about this fascinating historical figure, I doubt you could find one better than this.

Somewhere between "Caesar" and here Goldsworthy stumbled into a good editor. I didn't have to stop once or twice on every page to carefully parse a sentence so as to make it make sense. MUCH easier read, and a lot of thoughtful interpolation about the man who rescued the Roman Republic from death by chaos. A fine book, IMHO.

Goldsworthy has written a masterpiece in this book, and is perhaps the best writer to propduce this, hardcover edition, As you will learn, he tells the story with such ease, and there will be few books on Roman history that will be so 'readable' My advice to any-one considering to read about Rome in that period, is to go on line and get one from Amazon Books, find a cosy spot near the fire, open up your Tawny Port, If you do not have a bottle, Get one. and settle in for a marvelous time. Goldsworthy writes history like you were there, in person. He is totally fluid in his writing style, and presents history and its characters like it is happening right then. I have a paperback edition which became thumb marked from reading, that I wanted a hardback copy for my library. As I write this,it is a cold wintery evening, in the mountains of Northwestern Califiornia, and I am looking forwards to enjoy, the rest of the evening, and the Tawny Port. Enjoy!!!!!

Goldsworthy delivers again! A thorough biography about Augustus from adolescence to his dying breath. The book is written in a style very easy to read, although a basic understanding of roman history is helpful so you do not loose yourself in the names of places and people. This book will give you an in depth glimpse into each stage of Augustus' life. I personally walked away with a much greater level of respect for the man himself. He held absolute power but did not wield it clumsily or tyrannically. After he was established his actions were almost invariably in the better interest of the Roman Republic. He would not allow himself to be called king or any variation. He is one of the rare figures in history who seems to deserve the laurels showered upon him. The victorious general Caesar Augustus, Son of God, Father of his Country.

This is very thorough - yet accessible - biography of Augustus. Goldsworthy gives us a detailed chronological biography, beginning before Augustus birth with an intro to his family and immediate forebears, including of course, Great-uncle Julius. We then move on a very steady pace through his long life to his death an date immediate aftermath. Through Augustus eyes we also learn a great deal about Rome and the Mediterranean world of the times. I liked how Goldsworthy gives the reader background on the sources, the gaps in our knowledge, and competing interpretations of events (with his conclusions and reasons). I sensed that "I Claudius" is silently in the background since a lot of what the layman knows of this era comes from that novel (or the TV series). So he considers, e.g., whether Livia had a hand in the deaths of various rivals to Tiberius. One quibble - that is not at all Goldsworthy's fault. The author included what I expect would have been helpful genealogy charts since keeping track of the forever marrying, birthing and divorcing Romans can be challenging. Kindle need to figure out a better way to make the types go graphics legible in the ebooks.

The book is a thorough accounting of the life of Augustus from his late teens, when he was adopted by Julius Caesar, to his death. It certainly provides an understanding of the factors in his rapid rise to power, how his approach to leadership changed once he had secured power, and the legacy he left his successors. Augustus domination of Roman governance was pivotal - in some ways positive in some way negative - to the remaining 300+ years of the Roman empire.
