I had such high hopes for this book (the title alone is so intriguing). However, approach this one with caution. I was so disappointed. This book is extremely dense! Clearly it is not written for a general audience. The content is wordy, scientific and technical - way beyond the level of casual curiosity. I would like to see a second version of this book which summarizes the concepts and writes in a different color, i.e. less technical, more personable, more down to earth and overall more accessible to the common reader. As it stands, this is a book from one scientist writing for other scientists, not a general audience. If you're anything like me and you don't speak the technical language of science (but are interested in scientific principles/ideas) - sadly - you will not get much from this book.

One of the most amazing books of my life. This book is such a thorough investigation of living organisms and what it is to be alive. Mae-Wan Ho has an incredible ability to explain complex physics concepts in concise and clear sentences. I have a degree in physics, I think it would be quite difficult to follow without a science education but she explains many topics with much more clarity that most of my university lecturers did. I would highly recommend it to any physics student interested in biology and vice versa.

If you're a "hide-bound", hard-core scientist (one who believes phenomena shouldn't be discussed unless they can be mathematically quantifiable ((a socially constructed bias (((the bias part is solidly confirmed by current neuroscience)))), you'll "pho-pho" this book. If, however, you are interested in an integrative approach to scientific concepts which may explain much of what is considered "unexplainable" about why organisms (including humans) work as they do, this book will delight you. The science is solid (with the exception noted above), but innovative. And even if you're not totally convinced by the arguments, just mount the book on the wall as a poster and appreciate the glorious colors and images. I found it delightful in many ways.

This book is truly amazing. Dr. Mae-Wan Ho synthesizes different branches of science into one coherent theory that explains what “life” actually means. Physics, biology, and chemistry all combine to give a full picture of the ways our systems communicate with each other and regulate and adapt to changes. The first half of the book is more formula-laden and dense but you don’t need a degree in science to understand the concepts if you read carefully and take your time. The second half is written more in plain English and also probably more controversial as she builds on the science at the start to draw conclusions and speculate about what this all means. I might not agree with all of her conclusions but she is an amazing mind and she managed to explain her thoughts in a very understandable way for a general audience. This is easily one of the best science books I have ever read. I only wish that Mae-Wan Ho was still alive so I could see her speak somewhere.

For me this is turning out to be one of my most important books.Mae Wan is a unique scientist with a compelling worldview that if read with an open mind, will answer the fundamental questions about Consciousness, Life, and the perspectives beyond Quantum linearity.Knits together the Liquid Crystalline structure of living organisms and its complex fractal dynamics.Deeply explores the function of Collagen and how water is involved in the physics and chemistry of Life processes.Reading this book for me is an essential work in progress.

I've been reading more on efforts to invoke quantum physics in explaining life, so on a recommendation I picked up this book.I found this to be is an engaging and thought-provoking book, extremely dense with information and ideas running from accepted science through increasingly speculative extrapolations and concluding with some free-form philosophizing. This book was published in 1993, with the second edition I read coming in 1998.The early sections of Ho's book discuss life in thermodynamic terms. I was broadly familiar with the idea that life utilizes energy flow to build and maintain high levels of structural organization far from equilibrium. In several steps, and citing work of other scientists, she builds a case that explaining life in detail strains the traditional thermodynamic picture (which assumes microscopic homogeneity). She says intricately organized living things utilize molecular systems which transfer energy without thermalization (zero entropy growth). Energy is stored and used at the electronic level, not the thermal level. But how can these micro-level energy exchanges operate across the macroscopic dimensions of the organism? Ho says stored energy can amplify weak signals across larger distances.Throughout these early chapters, Ho uses the word "coherent" to describe the (non-thermal) energy storage and transfer within the organism (she says stored energy is by definition coherent energy). She will come back to this idea later in the book and explicitly argue that it must involve quantum coherence specifically. The energy we're talking about is electromagnetic. We know electrons move quickly and in organized fashion through crystals and super-cooled materials (superconductors). Could something like that be happening in the organism (despite the high temperature)? Ho uses the example of a solid state laser where energy flow induces a quantum phase transition which can take place very rapidly. She sketches how this might occur in living tissue and discusses the idea that cells could be solid state systems. In a later chapter Ho leaves aside the solid state system model of the organism in favor of specifically identifying it as a liquid crystal system. She became convinced of this in part by examining fruit fly larva under a polarizing microscope. The title of the book comes from the colorful organized patterns she detected. She believes the type of organization seen is evidence that organisms are essentially (coherently organized) liquid crystals.Ho has a chapter toward the end of the book on quantum physics. She summarizes the familiar phenomena of quantum entanglement and coherence (2 slit experiment, EPR, etc.). Then she tries to convey why the ideas and arguments of the preceding chapters lead her to conclude it is indeed quantum coherence (superposition of states, non-local entanglement) which prevails in the organism. But has she made the case? In a key passage she admits the evidence is circumstantial. For the mainstream scientific community to get on board, we'll need more.Likely, we'll need secure experimental results which demonstrates a biological system clearly exploiting non-trivial quantum effects. I note There was a recent study on photosynthesis than may fit into this category.
