On a whim we decided to go to Ireland for 5 days. I had only 10 days advance notice, so I immediately jumped onto Amazon to purchase my go-to travel guides (Fodor's and Lonely Planet.) They were invaluable in helping me decide quickly which areas of Ireland interested me the most. However, I didn't want a tour of Ireland. I wanted to really see Ireland. I wanted to be away from the hustle and bustle of the tour buses and meet the true locals. Back Roads Ireland did that for me. I was able look at the drives that were in the general areas we had decided to go, and pick out smaller towns off the beaten track. We did 4 different areas of Ireland in 5 days and this book really made a difference for us. I highly recommend it to all.

I'm using this book to plan a two week trip to Ireland. This book is awesome, and I ended up buying another copy for my traveling companion. It's broken into 25+ drives around the Republic and Northern Ireland and includes a pull out map, glossy color pages and helpful road tips for those of us from countries used to driving on the right side of the road. :) I also purchased the Rick Steeves travel guide for the trip, and refer to both of the books for different perspectives of the country. This book deserves five stars; however, I didn't give the book the extra star because there hasn't been a new one published in quite awhile. In researching one of the recommended walks in the book online, I learned that the path has since been closed to the public. Even though the publishing date is old for a travel guide, I'd still recommend this to people traveling to Ireland.

We just got back from a short trip to Ireland where we drove in order to see some of the places tours could not go. We used the descriptions to find historical sites and certainly used the written directions to find many of the sites. When our large map wasn't enough we could count on the precise directions given in the book. Due to the short length of our trip we couldn't do most of the drives but it was an invaluable tool for the few we were able to take. The car is certainly the way to see the historic sites when you are not interested in seeing the tourist centers. If you do drive, try and go before tourist season as the roads can be tricky and having to deal with less traffic, busses and people really makes the trip enjoyable. This is a great book for the self driving tour of Ireland. Keep in mind that many of the archaeological sites are in sheep fields and you will need shoes for climbing up and down steep hills, over large and small rocks and plenty of sheep pastures (manure piles).

This is by far the best travel book I have ever purchased. If you’re just flying to Dublin and taking some bus tours or something then this book is not for you. But the best way to see Ireland is to rent a car and actually see the country. I was worried about driving on the left side but that was completely not an issue. This book breaks out each section of the country and what there is to see and do in each section. Great pictures, great map included and tons of useful information to help plan your trip. My only problem was there is too much to see in only the one week that I was there.

This is a book for the unconventional tourist. If you enjoy getting to know a place very well, enjoy landscapes, and enjoy great accommodation, this book gets you there. But pair with a more detailed driving map, because you'll want to get even further back road than the included map here can get you. Also pair it with a hiking or walking map of the areas you'll be visiting if you like that sort of thing. This book is perfect for getting you to places where you'll be really pulling to get out of the car and into the landscape.

I almost didn't buy this book because I had purchased other Ireland travel books, but I am so thankful I did. The Back Roads of Ireland became our bible for our self-guided driving tour through Ireland. The book gave so much information on the Irish counties and things to see in each, and was used as a constant reference tool as we drove. I highly recommend for people driving their vacation through Ireland. Each county is well illustrated and the town by town listing was so very helpful. We drove 2,074 kilometers (1,288 miles) in less than 7 days. Without this book I am unsure we could have accomplished so much.

I looked through dozens of travel books about Ireland at the bookstore and this one was by far my favorite. I promptly ordered it off Amazon that night (since it was $10 cheaper than at the bookstore) and got it in a couple days. It's fantastic! It's a great drive-and-sightsee kind of book, perfect for our trip. My friends and I are leaving in a couple months and want to plan ahead for our trip, but unfortunately we only get to spend a week there. Most of the drives are 2-3 days long and include places to stay, but each section also has a "day trip" list of the top things on that drive. The book also has great descriptions of the rules of the road in Ireland as well as a basic driving guide and street sign page. Absolutely a must-buy if you're planning on driving around Ireland to sightsee!

We used this book to plan (and navigate) 10 days in Ireland, and had an excellent trip.We put together our own itinerary, taking parts of at least 6 or 7 of the dozens of multi-day drives that the book recommends, and we found it to be accurate and easy to customize. We also took several lodging recommendations from the book, and were pleased with these as well.
