No photos,few maps...this guy needs a camera

Very detailed descriptions on how to find birds anywhere in Mexico. Glad I bought this book and will read it again and take it along all my future trips.

Although it is 10 years old we found Howell's guide very useful in terms of both identifying groups of birds likely to be found in various habitats via checklist format as well as the specific routes to be taken. His advice to search out your own remains most useful but for a novice such as myself the book is a great framework.

An excellent resource with driving directions, location specifics. Heck I use it all the time - Enough Said, Right!

Some of the authors personal anecdotes about those he met & travelled with on this quest that lent nothing to our understanding of the Lemba or Venda cultures except post colonial bias could have been left out however: with that said I do value the authors valuable offerings of gold dust amidst the absence of substantive , accurate historical knowledge.

For a scholar, it was dissapointing. I wanted to know where the Ark went, not all the places the author drank whisky or the clever ways he could insult people. He brought up interesting facts, but didn't contact them well.

It was fun following Tudor Parfitt on his wander through northern Africa and Israel.No observable conclusion, but a great trip.

A fascinating real life quest for the answer to an age old question.

Excellent and interesting

Tudor Parfitt's account of his search for the lost Ark of the Covenant is brilliant. Never mind that it's based on a myth - all our civilizations are based on foundational myths. His interactions with those he met are compelling and offer to many of us a glimpse of people and cultures we're not likely to have the opportunity to meet ourselves. If you are looking for an authoritative and informative book on the Ark of the Covenant, my advice is for you to keep looking and pass this one by. If however, you are looking for information about the lost decendents of ancient Isreal, this is for you. I also get the distinct impression that Mr. Parfitt is one of those types that only looks for those facts that fit his particular theories. I can't quite buy into them. Mainly because he doesn't seem to have any respect for anyone's religous beliefs and constanly refers to them as "cults". He doesn't believe that the ancient Isrealites had the tools, material or ability to construct a gold covered ark, even though they were the artisans and craftsmen of Eygpt and had all of the spoils of Eygpt with them. Doesn't seem to bother him that they made a golden calf to worship though. Wonder how they did that? He discounts all the testomony of the power and presence of God and replaces it with a crude wooden drum and theories of gunpowder or some other inflammable material. If you are interested in the history of the Lemba, by all means buy this book. It has some interesting parts, but nothing that I would consider relevant to the present whereabouts of the Lost Ark of the Covenant.

This book about Desmond Doss was written by his second wife. (His first wife had died in a car accident.)The book tells of Desmonds early life through the extensive use of flashbacks as Doss is crossing the ocean on a troopship. It also covers his life after he received the Medal of Honor.When I first read about Desmond Doss (in a comic book published in 1948), I had a hard time believing he actually did what the book claimed. After much research, I have decided that the actions he took that led to him being awarded the Medal of Honor, comprise the MOST amazing story of WWII.It was a good and entertaining read.

Unfortunately, Doss's widow, Frances, is no writer. Much of her book is a mere shorthand accounting of events, experiences, and "lessons learned," rather than an engaging narrative about this wonderful Christian servant's amazing life. Its factual content does, at least, confirm the veracity of Mel Gibson's portrayal of Doss in the movie, HACKSAW RIDGE.A fuller (and more compelling) telling of Doss's story (including Doss, several of his former platoon members, and others, speaking on camera) is contained in the near-two hour documentary by Terry Benedict, THE CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR: The Story of An American Hero, produced two years before Doss's death in 2006. You can watch it anytime on YouTube.

It is an interesting read and uplifting in how this man stood on his faith in God knowing that he could serve his country without having to use a weapon, trusting in the Lord to help him take care of wounded soldiers and comforting them in their time of need. He trusted God to take care of him and his family during and after WWII and lived a better life because of it. I very much appreciated that he did not put down those soldiers who learned to use weapons of war and chose to respect his fellowmen and fight for the same cause in different but effective ways.

I came across this movie on tv one day completely by accident. I am a huge history buff and WWII is one of my favorites. I realized halfway through the movie that my mouth was hanging open. I was blown away by Mr. Doss and his story. How often do you find someone who stands by their morals....no matter what? The level of integrity this man displayed was beyond reproach. I would've loved to have met him to thank him for the lessons he taught me.I find it ironic that the officer that gave him such a hard time in the beginning and tried to get him kicked out, ended up being the one who deserted his men in the heat of battle. I served in the U.S. Army for 11 years, and I can count on one hand (with a few fingers left over) how many true "leaders" there were. Real leaders lead by example, never ask their soldiers to do something they aren't willing to do themselves, and go to bat for their people no matter who they have to go up against. You will find those leader's soldiers giving them 110%.Mr. Doss never compromised, even in the face of evil, even when he was being humiliated by his fellow soldiers and superiors, and not even in the middle of treacherous battle. He risked his life for the same people that a few months before hated his guts. He gave, not even knowing, or caring, that he would get something in return. He forgave those that persecuted him. We should all be like Mr. Doss, the world would be better for it.

Fascinated by the act of heroism displayed by one who carried no gun, but had a general one love for his fellow soldiers. His religious convictions are commendable.

Fabulous and almost unbelievable that a person like Desmond Doss accomplished (humbly) what he did. Also saw the movie-"Hacksaw Ridge". Obviously poorly recognized by Hollywood. But, then again, most of Hollywood has little interest in true life heroes who are men of faith!

I read Doss' book years ago, "The unlikeliest hero", and it moved me. I wanted to read it again, but the price for that book is now out of sight, so I went with this on. It's a very poor choice on my part! Poorly written, and a bad example of a tribute to this man. It seems to be written for school kids, and the wandering all over is annoying. If one didn't know this man's story, the impression given is one of a spoiled man, always looking for special favor! He appears to have gotten more time off to go to church than the entire company combined! I'm disappointed in this book big time!

An easy and quick read. I read it front to back in two days. I was actually onOkinawa in 1995 when Mr Doss was there. I wish I could have met him. An ordinary man performing an incredibly brave feat under impossible conditions . God bless Desmond Does.

This clever tale about an orange cat named Muffin who watches over a bakery, could not be more charming! While perusing the outside of the bakery one night, Muffin hears strange sounds coming from the backroom and discovers a surprise visitor.The teacher in me loves the descriptive language and the skillful use of onomatopoeia and similes in this book, so I was thrilled when my children asked to read it again and again. They were immediately drawn in by the engaging illustrations and adored the comical ending. This entertaining read aloud is sure to be a hit in both classrooms and homes.

Unexpected guests, rib-tickling poetic language, and a cat that is on the case. Delightful!

I've always admired Mr. Palmer's dry wit in Sense and Sensibility. In this marvelous short story he and Mr. Bennet share bottles of brandy and their dry, witty opinions on life when they are stranded at a crowded inn during a storm. Unfortunately, Mr. Bennet is overheard and must face the repercussions when he arrives back home.

So underappreciated. He needs to go back to his book room and just ignore everything, as he usually does. Darcy, chill out!

I am a huge fan of Julia's first cookbook, Small Victories, and it's now a go-to present for friends and family members of all cooking levels. I pre-ordered Now and Again and am once again thrilled. As always, her recipes are well-written and include thoughtful attention to detail for cooks who want to feed themselves and the folks they love without wasting food or money. I appreciated her creative interpretations of leftovers (e.g., the cauliflower and leftover salad soup) that encourage us to think a little differently or deliberately about what we cook. It's also always nice to know I'm not the only one who makes meatloaf just so she can have meatloaf sandwiches the next day!Everything I have made so far (including the kale and pepita salad, the applesauce cake, Italian flag pasta bake, confetti meatloaf, eggs with coconut cilantro sauce, beef and zucchini meatballs) will stay in rotation for our household, and I'm looking forward to cooking through the rest of the book!

I already have dozens of cookbooks and mostly rely on the internet for new recipes these days but after hearing an interview with the author on a podcast (The Sporkful?), I was very interested in her book. I literally read it like a novel, from cover to cover. Each chapter is a full meal/menu and then has suggestions about how to use various leftovers. At the back she has a "List of 7's" with lists of 7 ways to use leftover rice, 7 ways to use leftover produce, leftover snacks, etc.It's a really great book for the frugal foodie who doesn't like to see food go to waste and wants to be creative doing it.

This is not a book about leftovers as much as it is about entertaining. Now and Again is structured by entire meal - about 3-4 dishes that can work for groups of 4-6. Worry not if you're only two, because the book also includes extremely clever tips for using leftovers.I made an Italian lunch from the book, which included a baked ziti with ground turkey and creamy spinach mixed in, toasts with anchovy/garlic butter, and an arugula salad with pine nuts and lemon. The combination was a huge crowd pleaser, and the recipes were a joy - simple, no fuss, and no crazed steps. Very difficult to screw up.At the end, about half the salad was leftover. Each meal has tips for leftovers, and in this case the author suggested I blend the arugula salad with garlic, olive oil, and salt to make pesto. And, well, it made a delicious pesto. From soggy salad to delicious pesto with hardly any effort - genius.This book is brilliant in its simplicity. Easy to make yet impressive meals with no waste at the end. No need to think about what dishes to combine to form a meal - it's all planned out for you. I own about 30 cookbooks and this is my new favorite.

This is my third book by Julia (the author)! She's a wonderful writer and the recipes are so easy to make. If you're looking for a cookbook that you will grab often when you want to spice up your leftovers, this is the book. You might also look for FEED the Resistance Cookbook if you want a cookbook with a cause attached to it! You will not regret getting these cookbook! The ”Seven List” in this book is the best addition! All cookbooks should be required to have this :-)

One of the best cookbooks I’ve come across. The meals are amazing. We have a cookbook Club and we’ve been doing it for two years. We still talk about Turshens Small Victories Cookbook which was our first meeting. She again turned out an AMAZING cookbook. I’m sold she’s one of the best out there - a modern day ina!

This book has been living in our coffee table since Sept 4th when it arrived. I've read through it, my kids have read through it (they picked the chocolate cake to be out first recipe) and even my mom (who would rather make reservations for dinner) read through it (she liked the no fuss feel if the meals). Cookbooks are great coffee table books. This one shines because it not only has delightful recipes and delicious photos, but also because it tells a story that anyone can be a part of.Thanks @turshen for another great way to bring us all together. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Turshen invites you in from start to finish on how to prepare a meal for friends and family, and then follows you through the steps on making that same meal into subsequent dinners. Its inviting, easy to follow, and thorough. The meals are interesting and delicous!

I love Julia’s writing style and of course her recipes are no-fuss, often weeknight friendly. Many of the leftover ideas are sandwiches or quesadillas, but more importantly she empowers you to get creative and think outside the box. Along with Small Victories, a must have kitchen resource
