I consider this an excellent book. The quality of its construction and of its contents are both outstanding.The book was written for those who need to know about SEM analysis of surface textures of sand grains and I am not one of those. So my opinions are from a different point of view than the books intended audience. I deal with microscopic analysis of the surface textures of sand grains and the upper limits of what is illustrated in this book is about the lower limits of what I can see. However, one of the reasons I deal with surface textures is to help in determin the origin and transport history of sand grains and for this purpose the organization of the book is excellent. The photographs are clear, the vocubulary explained and there are ample expamples of the various surface features discussed. If you want to know what a particular surface texture looks like, that is in front part of the book. If you want to know what surface textures are found on rocks of a particular orign, that is in the back part of the book.. This two fold organization makes the book doubly useful.I expect it to become one of the most valuable books in my library.

I loved this book. Dr. Mason is a word master —- his writing is beautiful. I love WWI and WW II stories. Mason just takes you right there in the war and the field hospital. Being a nurse most of my life, I particularly enjoyed reading the hardships of dealing with critically injured soldiers. Of course the love story was magnificent.

This was the most interesting book I've read in a while. The story was Human, reflective , compelling and poignant.It causes you to question your own bravado, should you find yourself in this or a similar circumstance.The characters appear real and relatable. The story heartfelt.I recommend this book to anyone that wishes to understand to trials of the unfortunate people at the mercy of the Nazi's.

Lucius Krelewski begins his medical training in Vienna, not so much to be a healer, as to continue his passion for the study of science. In the middle of his training, WWI begins. With patriotic fervor, he enlists in the Austrian medical corps. Having barely touched any patients during his training, Lucius is sent to a remote medical outpost in the Carpathian Mountains. Here he learns both the art and craft of medicine, the tenderness of love and the barbarity of war. He encounters and is intrigued by what is now called PTSD which plagues so many of his patients. Post war, Lucius too struggles with nightmares.Mason writes a filigree of prose that borders on poetry. The reader is firmly in place in the beauty of the setting and the emotional depth of the characters. Battle scenarios are frightening in their ferocity. The anguish of Lucius and his patients is palpable. In the end, he goes on a personal odyssey to regain his love, his life and his soul. As in his novel, The Piano Tuner, Mason proves to be a master wordsmith. He creates a very human story that resonates long after the last page.

The Winter Soldier is an incredible book. I learned many new words, though I did not take the time to look all of them up in the dictionary. I JUST HAD TO READ ON AND ON. I have spent many, many years reading Holocaust stories. In this book, I learned about the absolute horrors of the war for the people in the ravaged countries. I learned that there is so much more i need to learn about the people and governments that fought and were changed in the First World War. I loved Lucious and his nurse. How will Lucius go on in life after his incredible search for his nurse. How will Lucius find a new life ? The book is so fine--real literature. I hope that a movie is not made of this novel--it stands complete as a fine book. The author did so much research--and it is here in the book, along with the real thoughts and actions of the people we read about. Please Daniel Masson, write another book. I am waiting for the next book. THANK YOU.

I picked this up after a review on io9. I'm normally a fantasy lover, but I read this through in one sitting. The story does a good job of character development, and writing from a single perspective. The limitations of the characters are made apparent and exposed without limiting the story, and the writing is almost painfully evocative at times. Really loved it the first 2/3rds of the story but it kind of lost its way a bit when the world opened back up for the characters.

First chapter. It's hard to tell if this will be a medical journal of war story as the title and Short opening implies.

Meh. Meh meh meh meh meh. TOTAL MEH. Not kidding on the "little" part, this thing is tiny. "The Beachcomber" will forever hold a special place in my heart. I was employed many years ago at the Marina del Rey restaurant and also visited the others on occasion. Our bartenders never divulged the "secret" recipes to ANYONE. A few of these concoctions are my very favorite, and I had no idea how layered the ingredients were. Now we can make them at home. It contained the information for the specific drinks that I remembered from the past and that I was looking for.

Was a little disappointed. No Scorpion Recipe. No Orange Duck Recipe. I personally knew the maitre de at the San DiegoDon the Beachcombers when Sinatra used to pull up to the dock. This is a poor attempt to make a profit with inferior products.Pu Pu Platter anyone?

The book is dedicated to "rum" drinks and no more. There are no pina colata or chi chi recipes in the book and they sure are many in the islands. Should be titled Hawaiian Rum Drinks. I tried several of the drinks and they were only so so and not at all what I experience when I am in Hawaii (my latest visit was last month for 3 weeks). Save your money.

I actually owned the first six volumes individually before purchasing this box set. As soon as I saw this set, I had to buy it. The box is really beautiful and perfect for storing these books. There is a difference of paper quality from the individual volumes, and each volume inside the box set is "Printed in Canada" whereas the individual volumes I own are "Printed in the United States." The paper quality feels cheaper and more flimsy, so they do have the potential to crease more readily than the individually purchased volumes.However, all the contents are the same with colored pages in the first few pages, so if you are not picky about paper and the slight difference in printing as an effect of the paper quality, then it is really a nice set with stickers and a lovely storage box. Also, the only other problem I found is the first and last volumes of this set (#1 and #6) have a little dent on the corner cover, probably from the manufacturer inserting the books in the box, and the fact that the paper quality is thinner.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, V. 11 by Naoko Takeuchi🌟🌟🌟🌟💔🎤🌙💫UGHHH. The last two books in this manga mess me up. The Sailor Star Lights are just so damn sad. This book in particular is mainly tragedy after tragedy after tragedy. But Chibi-Chibi finally appears! And we also get to see Chibi Usa in the future, along with her family, actually just living it up, which I think is pretty neat. Neptune cracks me up. Saturn brings me joy. (Ironically, too.) And Usagi—sniffles everywhere. As much as I enjoy Stars, it’s such a quick arc that it can feel rushed and a bit insane (but I also think that has a lot to do with Usagi’s state of mind). For the first half of the volume though, it’s really neat to see how every character has settled into a calm lifestyle, but as usual, that never lasts for long. A new enemy appears…and then the Sailor Star Lights come in.Seiya is a fan favorite, but I really think this volume doesn’t cover enough of Seiya for me to love her just yet. (The next volume is a different story.) In fact, I really love Seiya in this volume just because of Haruka’s reactions. (Uranus.) Haruka in particular is a lot like Seiya, which makes sense considering they are all guardians but in separate sections of the Milky Way. This volume really makes you want to dream up of all the other guardians and possibilities out there…which brings me to my next point. I LOVE that the guardians are the enemies in the final arc of Sailor Moon. I love reading about how all the “lesser” guardians are jealous and want their own planet. I love the idea of these “protectors” finally snapping and wanting to be the ones that are protected. It adds a flawed dynamic to the series I wish Takeuchi could’ve explored for ten volumes. But alas, we have two. Two great ones. (And one left.) I’m going to cry. Onto the last volume!~SATRecommended to: Sailor Moon fans (must read first 10 to understand this one), but you might enjoy Sailor Moon if you love female superheroes, galaxy-themed villains and mythology, and cheesy romance. This volume in particular also deals with severe denial and delusions.Favorite panel: Seiya and Usagi: “I’m sorry. I didn’t…intend to hurt you…” Not only is it emotionally tense but it’s a moment of awakening for Usagi to face her trauma and fears. It’s the breaking point of the arc.

I'm absolutely thrilled with my 3rd Sailor Moon manga volume! I've been reading scanned bits and pieces people have posted on the Internet for years and I'm so glad to finally be able to read the complete story. I did note some of the problems that others have mentioned, but I'm so glad to be able to read these for myself that I can easily look past it. While it would be so nice to have a perfect version, I am happy with what I've got.These volumes are thick! They are quickly read because there's not a ton of text on the pages but you'll sit and just look at the art after you've read the words. I don't want to put any spoilers in my review so I'll just say that this one picks up right where the last one left off, where the sailors are fighting Queen Beryl. In this volume we meet Chibi Usagi and the Black Moon Clan.I love all the Serenity and Endymion art and was nearly in tears almost through the whole first half. A much more dramatic and satisfying conclusion than the television series in my opinion.About to order Volume 4! I can't wait!

I'm finally getting around to collecting volumes 2-5, and this is where the manga really starts to rock; at least until Chibiusa shows up (I like her but I think that the Black Moon and Infinity arcs are better in the anime). I reread the the first volume after watching Sailor Moon Crystal (which is very good), and while I still loved it I must confess it was definitely not as good as the anime, but this is where the manga really gives the anime a run for its money. The plot never lets up, and it's quite dark at some points. I will admit that I do think it could have more comedy, and at this point the only character we really get to know apart from Usagi and Mamoru is Minako. It's because of those points that I prefer the anime; but this is still an awesome volume that every Moonie should have in their collection.

This is the best volume of Sailor Moon so far. We get to see how the Dead Moon Circus arc should have ended in all its glory. The only negative criticism is that Nehellenia's backstory isn't terribly original. It's just like Maleficent's story in Sleeping Beauty. I must confess I personally thought the anime's version was much better. But apart from that, everything else here is superior to the anime. The Amazoness Quartet are much better here, the Outer Sailors are present & to top it all off Tuxedo Mask actually helps finish off the villain. I think that last point I why I like it so much. I know he did that for the last arc but it's just so much cooler here. Anyways, this is my favorite arc of the manga, apart from the last one. That's right the next 2 volumes are even better. Join me next time when the manga goes out with a bang, not a whimper like the anime did.

This is the best freshman E&M text of all time -- provided that the class consists of students ready to handle the material at this level. Although the necessary tools of vector calculus are introduced from scratch, I doubt that most students would be able to get up to speed unless they had already had vector calculus or were at least taking it concurrently.The best known innovation of this book was the presentation of magnetism as a consequence of relativity. The book assumes you've already learned special relativity. (There is an appendix on SR in the 3rd edition, but realistically that wouldn't be sufficient.)I ordered a copy of the 3rd edition ($76), and compared it side by side with my disintegrating but much-loved copy of the 1965 1st edition. The price is amazingly reasonable compared to the kind of exploitative prices you see these days for textbooks.One thing I'd never noticed before is that the 1st edition has a notice on its copyright page saying that it's available for royalty-free use after 1970. (It was an NSF-sponsored project.) So theoretically it's legal to scan it and put it on the web for free. However, what I find when I look around on the web is people illegally making the 2nd edition available through sleazy file-sharing sites.The most important change is the switch from cgs to SI units. Three cheers. Without this change the book would have stayed in the ghetto forever.The 3rd edition is almost twice the bulk of the 1st. This is mostly because there are far more problems, and many of them have complete solutions in the back of the book. This is a great new feature.There is also an applications section at the end of every chapter.For the most part, though, it's exactly the same text with only a very few minor changes here and there. The line art is mostly the same. The graphic design isn't as nice as in the 1st edition, which often used gray backgrounds on the figures, with a full bleed. In the 3rd edition, the figures often aren't sufficiently clearly divided from the text, and the effect is extremely ugly.

I would say only this:Provided you have some basis on Special Relativity, this is the best first textbook on Electricity and Magnetism.Surely, after it you will need some other text with a stronger emphasis on mathematics.But the physical knowledge/intuition is build here better than in any other book, thanks to the wonderful/delightful explanations of Edward Purcell.At the undergraduate level is possibly one of the best written books in physics.

I studyed it in my years of university, subsidiarly to Halliday (the main text) and liked very much of Purcell's book. It's more hard that Halliday's and i don't liked of CGS system. But the explanations are good and the problems were interestings, and many times challenging. Now appear a new version, aperfectaly, corrected, MKS system, and with many problens solved and others proposed. The level is from intermedieted to advanced, in betwin Halliday and Reitz (or Griffts), more near Reitz. It is time of review my forty years old knwoledge of eletromagnetism and it will be with Purcell's.

In your introductory EM course, this may seem a bit too much. But after reviewing the subject after you take upper division, you will see that this was actually amazing in detail as it takes from other subjects and combines all relevant information.

This book is very rigorous. The author demonstrates outstanding writing skills; the explanations are very clear and precise. Do your homework on vector calculus. There is hardly no review on the subject. The book jumps head first into vector calc., so if you're rusty on the subject I strongly recommend you review it, or have a calc. textbook at the ready. Sit back and enjoy the ride; this book is amazing.

This book is really an intro to E&M but it is very dense with verbal descriptions of the physics involved. For that reason even though it seems light on equations it is fairly heavy reading.There are plenty of diagrams and interesting situations. Rather than just throw out a few equations and work an example the author goes into great detail in describing the physics of a situation. I think it is a very useful book for that reason.This is not the sort of text you can scan through to find an equation and then plug and chug some numbers. It requires actually reading the chapters to get the gist of what he's saying. It would be better paired with a book heavy on equations and examples and light on verbal descriptions rather than used stand alone.The real gem in the book is the derivation of the magnetic field from Special Relativity. This is something that should be standard in E&M texts but seems to be missing in most of them.

A classic for a reason. This is beautiful book. It is still the best introduction to the subject for anyone who truly wants to understand it. I treasure my copy.

Purcell takes an unconventional approach in this book. Most of the electromagnetics is derived from three laws in this book: Coulomb's law, charge invariance, and special theory of relativity. This approach is especially beautiful and fruitful as the reader can make deep connections between electricity and magnetism. Yet, the book is easy to digest as most of the material is explained over experiments with very useful illustrations. The clarity and precise language with which the material is presented almost qualifies the text for bedtime reading. Finally, each chapter ends with practical applications of the topics covered.
