As a continuing interest in all things humorous when it comes to history, I picked up this book because it looked like a very interesting read and also, most history books do not touch on WHO many of these rulers and sovereigns really were. Thanks to direct or indirect inter-marriages, Europe and Asia (ancient and near-current) had some pretty interesting leaders that put their quirks on show for all to see. But one must remember, that without some of these delightfully intriguing people, we may not have some of the famous places and land marks that draw in visitors year after year.Some of my favorites in this book are:* Shi Huangdi, Emperor of China (259-210BC) He had a personal quest for immortality and built the famous terracotta army with the help of over 700,000 prisoners of war.* Erzebet Bathory (1560-1614) the blood countess, bathed in the blood of virgin maidens to preserve her youth, and said to be a vampire.*Vitellius, Emperor of Rome (AD37-68) Prize Glutton, little military skill or experience; loved food and entertainment, nearly bankrupted the empire, in the end his supporters and enemies had had enough.* Norton, I (1819-80) Self-styled emperor of the U.S. and Protector of Mexico. Aspiring entrepreneur who wanted to make the country a greater power. Many believed he was the rightful ruler of the states.* Otto, I - King of Bavaria (1848-1916) Barking mad, took over for big-brother and said to be so deranged that he was put under house-arrest with political babysitters.* Michael Abney-Hasting, 14th Earl of Loudoun - The rightful king of England? - geneticists traced the bloodline of George Plantagenet, 1st Duke of Clarence from the time of his death and senior descendants to the present in a quest to find a blood-heir to the throne.This book is a fun tour through the lives of some of history's strangest heads of state. I recommend.
If ever there was a manifesto against monarchy and for republics, this is it! The rulers and family members described in this book are so awesomely evil and depraved that today they would not have been tolerated (I hope and pray!). I learned more creative ways of killing people than I ever wanted to know. Some of these people were sex addicts and absolutely no one in the kingdom was safe from them. Madness tolerated because of royal bloodline? Puh-leeze! Who would want a lunatic deciding what happens to everyone in the country. Evidently, little was understood about heredity. These tales of terror usually end with someone finally realizing that the only way to stop the madness is to imprison and/or kill the royal culprit. This was, I hate to admit, a very entertaining read.
This is an amusing collection of history's strangest rulers, chronologically organized to current times. The only slight drawback is that some of their deeds are really gruesome and not for the squeamish. But fortunately there are more amusingly weird wackos than Count Draculas, so the book never turns too dark.
This was so sad but also an interesting read. I already knew a lot about the cousins marrying cousins and the infant mortality which was possibly due to interbreeding but there were many things I did not know. Certainly, this was an informational book! I recommend it.
This book is for sadistic people who enjoy reading about other sadistic people.
Enjoyed the book. It is a fairly easy read. The beginning was much more interesting then towards the end, but I like reading about earlier times.
This is very interesting read and if you love history you will love these facts about the royals. It's a great book to read when you are free and want to just sit and read and be amused and even shocked at some of the exploits.
Really interesting stuff about kings and queens - very well written indeed and although inevitably very much of the same thing (one mad king is as mad as the next mad queen) it does not bore!
