Unpacking Queer Politics argues that the strong lesbian feminist movement of the 1970s, which was able to articulate a philosophy and practice that distinguished lesbian politics from gay male politics, was submerged in the 1990s beneath a gay male agenda called queer politics. The new politics repudiated lesbian feminist ideas and celebrated ‘manhood’ as a goal for gay men. Practices which construct this ‘manhood’, such as sadomasochism, cutting and piercing, female-to-male transsexual surgery, and which are promoted in queer politics, need to be understood as forms of self-harm which result from the oppression of lesbians and gay men. The political agenda of queer politics is damaging to the interests of lesbians, women in general, and to marginalized and vulnerable constituencies of gay men. The book concludes by arguing that precisely the commitment to equality in relationships and sex that has been so important to lesbian feminists, and so excoriated in much of queer theory, should form the basis of a social transformation. In this way lesbians should be seen as the vanguard of social change.

I used this book when preparing my senior project research on the subject of transsexualism and the feminist movement. At the time, it was one of the few sources on the topic I could find. Not only did it cover the topic of transsexuals, but it also covered a myriad of other topics, including the misogyny and lesbophobia contained in queer politics. The research in the area of meaningful critiques of queer politics is certainly lacking, so it is refreshing to see it here from a lesbian feminist perspective. This is fascinating from cover to cover and I recommend this book to anybody studying gender, queer theory, and LGBT activists.

A brilliant feminist dismantling of the sexism in so-called "queer" politics.

Jeffreys' polemical approach eclipses some of her more valid points about the failings of queer politics. True, queer politics and theory have often been dominated by white male perspectives. True, lesbian specificity ought to be a consideration in gender and sexuality studies.That said, if I could have given this book a lower rating I would have.Why, you ask? "Unpacking Queer Politics" is, at root, an amateurish yet vicious attack on transexuality (particularly FTM trans people), S/M, and various other practices and people which Ms Jeffreys deems to be in opposition to her lesbian-feminist project. This project seems to be devoted to reinstating some idea of a natural female body, a pure sexuality, and a deeply identity-based politics.Frankly, reading even a few pages of this book made me sick to my stomach. After having read the whole thing, however, I curled up into a ball and cried. The brute disgust and hateful rhetoric which Jeffreys deploys against trans people is illogical at best. This book has the dubious honor of being the worst I've read in recent memory.

Some books change the way you see the world and the way you want the future to be. Unpacking Queer Politics is such a book.For two decades, Queer has dominated Western ideas about lesbian and gay life. It has also affected heterosexual relations because many leading figures Queer politics are heterosexual and bisexual. It has directed women towards an appreciation of any kind of sex, in the name of liberating us from restrictions on our right to choose sexuality. And yet as the new century approached, I began to hear whispers of discontent among women; that this sexual freedom we all wanted had not quite arrived in the way we had dreamed it would. Queer politics had become a kind of commercial playground dominated by gay male and heterosexual money and interests. The only lesbians on the Queer scene seemed to be sadomasochists, masculine worshippers, or butch-femme revivalists. But as Sheila Jeffreys reveals, we really should have seen it coming. As she charts us through the 1970s and into the beginnings of Queer, it's suddenly clear that it couldn't have turned out any other way. But this book may just be powerful enough to change the course of women's sexual future away from Queer and towards a far more exciting shore.Jeffreys goes where most of us fear to tread. She travels through the backrooms of sex bars, into the studios of gay porn, onto the agendas of sadomasochists, and into the rooms where lesbian women and gay men women are now cutting, beating and branding themselves and each other in the name of Queer liberation. She never departs from her love of women and her commitment to our freedom. Yet she does something quite unexpected in these pages; she reaches out to gay men as well as lesbians by recognising that Queer capitalises on our dual alienation from the heterosexist world. It is this form of sex capitalism that she claims must be challenged and overthrown if we are to move once more towards creating a world in which women can become truly liberated.It is through the recognition of Queer politics as strongly heterosexist and therefore conservative that Jeffreys is able to offer us insight into why it has become so successful. Her research is thorough and because of this, she is able to create a convincing case for the argument that Queer promotes practices which violate the most basic human rights of women and men. It is a retrograde and homophobic politics, she argues, particularly in its support for the genital mutilation of allegedly 'masculine' women and 'feminine' men in transgender surgery. This, Jeffreys claims, is a gross violation of human rights and should be challenged as such. But as Chapter 6 reveals, some governments are now offering money for allegedly incorrect women and men to be 'corrected' under the knife. Jeffreys asks quite simply, 'why don't we do away with gender altogether?' I asked myself shortly afterwards 'how could I have studied gender and feminism for a decade and never come across that question?'But this is the beauty of Unpacking Queer Politics; it is simple in the way that you only find in the work of a writer who understands the whole environment in which their subject has developed - in this case, the evolution of Queer from an idea into a dominant politics and practice.This is a serious and very readable book. Even if you don't agree with the author's politics, this is a history of Queer that should be on the shelves of all those interested in human rights, sexual relations, human behaviour, feminism, sexual subcultures, legal approaches to lesbian or gay and transgender rights, revolutionary politics, pornography, legal concepts of privacy rights, political science, and social change.The late anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko said (and I paraphrase from memory), 'the greatest weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed'. I believe that Unpacking Queer Politics may just succeed in disarming Queer. It may lift from women's minds the shackles laid down by a sexual liberation movement gone terribly male. And maybe for us twenty somethings, some of the optimism of the last chapter will give us the belief that we can go up against sexual exploitation, and we can win.

This is a book that had to be written. It is intellectually first-rate, courageous and powerful. I applaud the author's gutsy and flawless analysis of the "sex as abuse as subversion as fun" farce that is now, sadly, the norm in so much lesbian and gay writing. By saying what has to be said, Jeffreys gives all those silenced by the ignorance of those who "have fun" at the expense of others a voice with which to say no. A must read for anyone who cares about justice and equality.

As a crusty old, bisexual liberal I raise a toast every year to celebrate Reagan's death and when this woman departs the earth I will do the same...for exactly the same reasons. I don't especially like hateful, bigoted, conservative people who are a menace to individual freedom.Even for her this is a trans/homo/bi-phobic, simplistic, asexual, joy-killing tome and that is saying something. She's like Cotton Mather with an extra X chromosome.P.S. It's really not OK for any feminist old enough to remember gay and bisexual men dying in the plague of the early AIDS epidemic (including pioneers for the rights of all LGBT people like Stephen Donaldson) to be homophobic.

My son told me about this book being read in his first grade class, and he was excited about it since he loves candy corn so much, so I bought it to read at home too. Ugh. This story has not stood the test of time. It is less about a candy corn contest than about one boy trying to come to terms with the fact that one of his friends smells badly because he is a bed wetter. In the end, the book tries to teach some positive social lessons, but all throughout the story until that point, the kids are just behaving meanly towards this one character. As I was reading it with my son, I felt compelled to repeatedly stop and discuss how none of what they were saying or doing was ok, and it ruined the enjoyment of the story. I would not recommend this book at all, and I'm pretty disappointed that it was teacher-enforced reading in my son's class.

I love all of Patricia Reilly Giff's books. I grew up reading the Polk Street School books. I related to the character's feelings and experiences, because Mrs. Giff is so good at getting into their hearts. Her books are very validating to children, while teaching important lessons. This story teaches about cheating, doing the right thing, and how to handle it after you've hurt a friend's feelings.

Part of what makes this such a nice and engaging story for young kids is the fact that the characters are so real and easy to relate to. My kids tried their darndest to like Jack and Annie, but those two are boring as heck -- even with dinosaurs, mummies, and pirates. Meanwhile, Giff's characters make walking down the hall seem like an adventure.Some people have expressed concern about how mean-spirited some of the characters are. They are kids, and that's how kids are. They are not old enough in the story to understand empathy. We had a child in my son's class who was bullied and we read this book to gain some insight into how hurtful bullying can be. This book does NOT encourage bad behavior. My son came away from it admiring the kindness of one of the teachers and felt like he learned a lot

I gave this as a gift to some of my grandchildren, so I haven't read it. They wanted to guess how many candy corns were in a jar just as they did in the book and had fun doing this. Their mother let them put in a guess for reading so many pages. They told their mother this was their favorite book they had read. So for that reason I give it 5 stars.

Grandson enjoyed

This book was very entertaining and kept you guessing two thirds through the book how many candy corn there were. Alot is going on in the classroom and tends to jump from classwork to a sleepover - but interestingly my daughter was able to follow right along. This book is about friendship and typical child thoughts. I enjoyed this book as well as my daughter. Good read.

This book is the only head and neck anatomy book I'm familiar with, so I can't compare it to anything except a general anatomy textbook that I've used previously. This text has helpful illustrations and photos. I really appreciated the flashcards included in the back of the book. I tore them out and used them for studying, though I wish they had included more on muscles and nerves. The keyword sections of each chapter were not always helpful, there were several technical terms I had to look up on the internet because they were not in the glossary. However, the text itself was rather thorough in explaining anatomical locations and providing pragmatic landmarks in relation to administering anesthesia or identifying sources of infection. It also mentioned certain parts that are variable among the human population, like the absence of the middle superior alveolar nerve in about 1/4 of people. Quite fascinating.Unfortunately, I noticed several errors in the text and on the flashcards while studying. Certainly this happens with any book, but with this being the 5th edition I find it surprising how many I found. At least I learned enough from the book to know when I saw an error!

Really decent anatomy book. This was required for my first semester of dental hygiene school, and it really is one of the better textbooks I've had. Very easy to follow. Also, I love that it has flashcards included in the back!

I think there may be some sparse Katakana, but for the most part it's Hiragana.It's not only an excellent way to improve your Kana reading, it's also invaluable for improving vocabulary, something recorded language courses like Pimsleur and Rosetta sorely miss. Reading new words in context of an interesting story assists greatly in visualizing and remembering them. In this sense the formatting of the book too is excellent:Every page has the Kana at the top (with Furigana above whatever Kanji characters appear,) and phrase-by-phrase translations in Romaji (English phonetic) at the bottom of the page. Which means you can check a given word's translation instantly - a big, big help when you're using an e-reader like a Kindle or Fire, because you're thereby spared the necessity of doing endless page-flips to get to some general glossary located far from the page you're on. It's right there where you need it, but below everything else so you don't "cheat" with inadvertent glances while you read.In the third volume of this series the author inexplicably omits the Furigana completely, which makes that third book (and presumably those subsequent to it,) useless to anyone without a large number of Kanji memorized. I'm currently at something like 28, total. Hopefully that odd decision will be corrected, but this and Volume 2 are indispensable for beginning-to-intermediate Japanese students looking to move from "stare-at-each-character" reading to fluid sight-reading of Kana and, eventually, Kanji. Just an excellently-conceived and -executed series with clever, interesting short stories.

This is a very good book for beginners, and by beginners I mean those who are familiar with hiragana, katakana I more than 100 kanji. Why did I mention kanji? Simply because when I started to learn the Japanese language, I tried to read it and it became a disaster for my self-confidence. So I waited for some time and studied hard so today I can open a book which claims to be for beginners and not to fall into depression when I realize that I can read it at once.Stories in this book are very lightly written, and if you had mentioned knowledge you will find unknown words, but you won't be so much disappointed in yourself - especially because you can mark those words, and study them after. There is a dictionary, and even some words, like Japanese phrases you can't translate literary, are translated not so good, the dictionary itself is of a great help. And those Japanese phrase I'm talking about are things someone who is not so much beginner will recognize and understand, so it is not a big problem.Another bonus is free audio you get with a book, which is always good to have.

This is a good intermediate level book however Japanese is a very complex language. I recommend that you start with an easier book on Hiragana first. Japanese has three alphabets, Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. You need to know some Hiragana before you start this book. Hiragana is used to "spell" out Japanese words, Katakana is used to spell foreign words, and Kanji are antique Chinese characters where one character represents a whole word. Learning Japanese is going to require time and work.

As a student of the Japanese language, its sometimes hard to find beginner materials that DON'T just stress travel situations. There are only so many times I want to read about buying a red sweater or how to find a hotel...or talk about my hobbies. So I was very happy to find these little fairy tales. The bottom of each page has a glossary that runs along with the story on the page, that explains both the kanji and the idiomatic phrases so its very helpful. The range of learning is for the slightly advanced beginner so there aren't so many Kanji but there are some. Its great to see it all in context, it makes it easier to learn than rote memorization.

Nicely adapted and well put together for the beginning audience, not to mention quite fun! Haven't found better Japanese learning material for the price anywhere for English speakers. I am a little past beginner in Japanese. Can read/write in both hiragana and katakana and know some kanji. A little rusty, but anyway....This book isn't bad. There are 5 stories, each a little more difficult than the next. All stories have 3 parts, one with the Japanese on top and a sort of dictionary of the words on the bottom of each page. If you have ever looked at any books similar to this, it is the same format. Most of these Japanese reading books for beginners have the vocabulary on the bottom. There isn't a lot of kanji, so nothing really out there. The second part of each story is strictly in Japanese. Then the third part is the summary. The summary is the only thing I have issue with. When I bought it, I though it would have been and actual translation of the story in English, but they are just summaries. So, just be aware of that when purchasing. If you are a beginner then this might be frustrating for you. I am a little further along so isn't a big deal for me personally. I would put the difficulty level somewhere between the various children stories, and the other Japanese reader books. That is not meant as an insult, but it seems to fit nice for a "next step" in reading.

This is a great way to learn to read Japanese in a fun and interesting way. These stories contain a variety of Kanji and of course a lot of Kana. This is part of a series of books that include a variety of interesting stories and characters. Highly recommended for people who know a little Japanese grammar and are interested in learning to read more fluently.

The book started out pretty darn good, actually. But then it slowly spiraled into an unrealistic, inconsistent, implausible middle to end hmmmmmm. The hero of the book is an immature, catty, violent, out of control woman. Yet somehow she manages to save her small town where people are being killed like flies. And not only does she save the town, she becomes the new chief of police in spite of breaking out a prisoner, shooting a fellow officer, and murdering a bad guy. Right, sure. The hero is unlikable because she is so smart, knows better than everyone else, and is above the rules. Entertaining to a certain degree but one of those books that leaves you shaking your head and rolling your eyes. I won’t be reading the second in the series.

I am blown away with the entertaining, clever, and just-complex-enough storyline of “Vanishing Girls” by Author Lisa Regan. At first I thought this book was a little slow. Also, was thinking the main character, Detective Josie Quinn, was maybe not so likable for a detective. She is aggressively fierce and blunt. Then I wondered if someone with a seriously abusive childhood could be stable enough to be a cop? The story, though, just got better and better and my concerns were alleviated.A small town in Pennsylvania is searching for a missing teen and their best detective, Josie, is on suspension for excessive force. She is warned over and over again to stay away from the investigation, but that doesn’t stop her. Meanwhile, her personal life is a mess; a husband who is in love with a stripper but won’t sign the divorce papers. He has done something to her that you will be hard pressed to imagine or guess! Josie’s investigation finds connections to past kidnappings and an evil so massive it will give you chills!The characters are complicated and emotional; the surprises in the second half of the book are voluminous, and the action almost non-stop. An imaginative, and engrossing read you shouldn’t miss!

As a detective and current supervisor in a similar sized agency, I can confidently say that the first chapter (as far as I made it) was so ridiculously unrealistic that I'm writing my first review on Amazon.

I enjoyed this book, kept me very interested until the end and I finished it rather quickly. I feel this was a fast paced, well written read. Josie is a strong character and I liked her, I really could care less about her sex life though! When I read a thriller, I want just that, a thriller! I really don't care to have the sex/romance part of it. That is just me, don't hate me!There were a lot of "coincidences" in this book that made some things a bit implausible. I became invested enough in this story though that I would definitely like to read more of Josie and see where the author takes this series! Looking forward to book number 2!

I thought this book was just dreadful. The heroine of the book is not fit to be on the police force. She is too emotional, beats up on people, is classless (her boyfriend has a bigger package than her ex-husband), and I am sick of reading about cops with family problems. I read to escape family problems. As usual in every self-published book by an author they have to put in a poor cat being abused (in this case drowned). I won't be buying the next book in the series.

Yes, the book keeps you interested at a fast pace. That is not the point. The subject matter is horrifying. We all know that rape is a terrible crime and hope to God it ends today. And we all know that it needs to be dealt with. Writing a book such as this doesn't help. I'm sorry I read it and will never order one like it or another from this author. Those that gave it 5 stars really need to reevaluate how certain subject matters should be presented. This doesn't come close to the mark...

This is a messy story on so many levels. While I liked the way the author describes a scene, the story itself is not believable. When a book is being advertised as “absolutely gripping” “absolutely heart stopping” it sounds just a bit too desperate... and btw... I had no trouble putting it down. This was déjà vu... I’d read plots like this about a dozen times before.

I'm a huge Lisa Regan fan so I couldn't wait to start this new series. The title alone would've had me purchasing this book, and I wasn't disappointed. Lisa delivered an amazing thriller! The story keeps you on the edge of your seat from the first chapter all the way to the last chapter when you're not totally sure how it's going to end.Josie Quinn is a hard-hitting, take-no-prisoners, yet relateable lead character. Even when you're screaming at the pages because she's totally breaking the rules and doing something she shouldn't be doing, you're still able to relate to her. All of the characters are well fleshed out and easy to like, and/or hate, depending. I cannot wait to read the follow-up. I have a feeling that Josie Quinn still has a lot of work to do.5 Stars all the way for this thriller!

Hard to not love a classic. I had previously read Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights and very much enjoyed reading the full collection of all the sisters. Amazingly well informed women - politically, socially and theologically - considering no internet etc to provide current information. Demonstrates the value of study (and the time to do that) and interpersonal communication. There are a few typos in the books, thus the rating.

Love the books. But this edition (or at least the Anne Bronte books so far) are riddled with a ridiculous number of errors, making it difficult to read.

The stories are fantastic but the editing was poor. Many spelling and punctuation errors but still readable.

Most of these novels are over-written and over-rated. Sorry. However, I did keep in mind that was the way books were written in those days. This is a true treasure-trove for fans of the Brontes's work.

The story of Wuthering Heights is a story of the best and worse of human beings. I liked how real the characters were in this novel. I would say that sometimes the writing was hard to understand due to the fact of how words were written at the time, but it does not detract from the story being told. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys any novels from the same time period. You will not be disappointed.
