This coming November 11th will the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended The Great War, now known as World War One. Daniel Mason's glorious novel of that war, "The Winter Soldier", is a must-read for anyone who appreciates excellent historical fiction and a profoundly gripping love story.Lucius Krzelewski is 22 years old, a medical student from Vienna, sent to act as a doctor at a Regimental Hospital in the Carpathian mountains in the winter of 1915. When Lucius arrives at the “hospital” it’s not at all what he expected, but HE is not what they expected, either. Met by the hospital's only remaining nurse, Sister Margarete, she quickly surmises Lucius’ inexperience and lack of practical training. Sister Margarete ends up being his greatest teacher.Mason's careful and vivid descriptions of the medical practices of the time, and the brutality of the war are not for the squeamish. Central to the plot is "the winter soldier", a young man named Horvath, who is brought in with severe "shell shock". Author Daniel Mason, according to the cover notes, is a professor of psychiatry at Stanford, so it is not surprising that his knowledge of neurological disorders connected with WWI is vast, and thus informs Lucius' care of the afflicted. What an utter tragedy that war was. Some high points of the novel are:- A riveting and revolting description of catheterizing a moving target!- Sister Margarete's fabulously grotesque and visceral monologue on lice. You'll start to itch!- A wonderfully inventive ploy against a first tier villain.- Exquisite prose with just the right amount of wit, and a protagonist who is so so wonderfully human. When I got to the last chapter I found any excuse (laundry! groceries! cleaning!) to pause, so that I could to draw it out. I did not want the novel to end - I was afraid to know what happened. I was so fully invested by then it was almost a physical reaction as I slowly turned the pages. When it came, the end was nothing I could ever have imagined. And it was perfect.

I loved this book. Dr. Mason is a word master —- his writing is beautiful. I love WWI and WW II stories. Mason just takes you right there in the war and the field hospital. Being a nurse most of my life, I particularly enjoyed reading the hardships of dealing with critically injured soldiers. Of course the love story was magnificent.

This was the most interesting book I've read in a while. The story was Human, reflective , compelling and poignant. It causes you to question your own bravado, should you find yourself in this or a similar circumstance. The characters appear real and relatable. The story heartfelt.I recommend this book to anyone that wishes to understand to trials of the unfortunate people at the mercy of the Nazi's.

Lucius Krelewski begins his medical training in Vienna, not so much to be a healer, as to continue his passion for the study of science. In the middle of his training, WWI begins. With patriotic fervor, he enlists in the Austrian medical corps. Having barely touched any patients during his training, Lucius is sent to a remote medical outpost in the Carpathian Mountains. Here he learns both the art and craft of medicine, the tenderness of love and the barbarity of war. He encounters and is intrigued by what is now called PTSD which plagues so many of his patients. Post war, Lucius too struggles with nightmares.Mason writes a filigree of prose that borders on poetry. The reader is firmly in place in the beauty of the setting and the emotional depth of the characters. Battle scenarios are frightening in their ferocity. The anguish of Lucius and his patients is palpable. In the end, he goes on a personal odyssey to regain his love, his life and his soul. As in his novel, The Piano Tuner, Mason proves to be a master wordsmith. He creates a very human story that resonates long after the last page.

The Winter Soldier is an incredible book. I learned many new words, though I did not take the time to look all of them up in the dictionary. I JUST HAD TO READ ON AND ON. I have spent many, many years reading Holocaust stories. In this book, I learned about the absolute horrors of the war for the people in the ravaged countries. I learned that there is so much more i need to learn about the people and governments that fought and were changed in the First World War. I loved Lucious and his nurse. How will Lucius go on in life after his incredible search for his nurse. How will Lucius find a new life ? The book is so fine--real literature. I hope that a movie is not made of this novel--it stands complete as a fine book. The author did so much research--and it is here in the book, along with the real thoughts and actions of the people we read about. Please Daniel Masson, write another book. I am waiting for the next book. THANK YOU.

I picked this up after a review on io9. I'm normally a fantasy lover, but I read this through in one sitting. The story does a good job of character development, and writing from a single perspective. The limitations of the characters are made apparent and exposed without limiting the story, and the writing is almost painfully evocative at times. Really loved it the first 2/3rds of the story but it kind of lost its way a bit when the world opened back up for the characters.

First chapter. It's hard to tell if this will be a medical journal of war story as the title and Short opening implies.

Meh. Meh meh meh meh meh. TOTAL MEH. Not kidding on the "little" part, this thing is tiny. Additionally, the recipes in it cannot be trusted: Listen, I know that the recipe for the Zombie is up for debate, but this one has one of the crappy Zombie recipes in it. Additionally, the recipe for "original Mai Tai" in this hunk of crap of a book is so far off base that you'd be better off using it as a coaster than a guide for mixing libations. Booooooo! Boo I say! Do not buy this book.

"The Beachcomber" will forever hold a special place in my heart. I was employed many years ago at the Marina del Rey restaurant and also visited the others on occasion. Our bartenders never divulged the "secret" recipes to ANYONE. A few of these concoctions are my very favorite, and I had no idea how layered the ingredients were. Now we can make them at home. The harder to find liquors/spirits can be found at a wonderfully stocked supply house- or Google it.--Thank You to Pheobe Beach for allowing these recipes to be published!

This book contains classic tiki cocktails from the legendary Don the Beachcomber with great photos and informative text. A must have if you like tiki and tropical drinks!

Some really good looking recipes. I think I'll have fun with this book making some different and exotic drinks. I love drinks in Hawaii.

Great little book for the tiki bar collector. Drinks are yummy and book adds to my collection a must have if you have ever been to Don's in Huntington Beach

It contained the information for the specific drinks that I remembered from the past and that I was looking for.

Was a little disappointed. No Scorpion Recipe. No Orange Duck Recipe. I personally knew the maitre de at the San DiegoDon the Beachcombers when Sinatra used to pull up to the dock. This is a poor attempt to make a profit with inferior products.Pu Pu Platter anyone?

The book is dedicated to "rum" drinks and no more. There are no pina colata or chi chi recipes in the book and they sure are many in the islands. Should be titled Hawaiian Rum Drinks. I tried several of the drinks and they were only so so and not at all what I experience when I am in Hawaii (my latest visit was last month for 3 weeks). Save your money.

I actually owned the first six volumes individually before purchasing this box set. As soon as I saw this set, I had to buy it. The box is really beautiful and perfect for storing these books. There is a difference of paper quality from the individual volumes, and each volume inside the box set is "Printed in Canada" whereas the individual volumes I own are "Printed in the United States." The paper quality feels cheaper and more flimsy, so they do have the potential to crease more readily than the individually purchased volumes. However, all the contents are the same with colored pages in the first few pages, so if you are not picky about paper and the slight difference in printing as an effect of the paper quality, then it is really a nice set with stickers and a lovely storage box. Also, the only other problem I found is the first and last volumes of this set (#1 and #6) have a little dent on the corner cover, probably from the manufacturer inserting the books in the box, and the fact that the paper quality is thinner.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, V. 11 by Naoko Takeuchi🌟🌟🌟🌟💔ðŸÅ½¤ðŸŒ™ðŸ’«UGHHH. The last two books in this manga mess me up. The Sailor Star Lights are just so damn sad. This book in particular is mainly tragedy after tragedy after tragedy. But Chibi-Chibi finally appears! And we also get to see Chibi Usa in the future, along with her family, actually just living it up, which I think is pretty neat. Neptune cracks me up. Saturn brings me joy. (Ironically, too.) And Usagi—sniffles everywhere. As much as I enjoy Stars, it’s such a quick arc that it can feel rushed and a bit insane (but I also think that has a lot to do with Usagi’s state of mind). For the first half of the volume though, it’s really neat to see how every character has settled into a calm lifestyle, but as usual, that never lasts for long. A new enemy appears…and then the Sailor Star Lights come in.Seiya is a fan favorite, but I really think this volume doesn’t cover enough of Seiya for me to love her just yet. (The next volume is a different story.) In fact, I really love Seiya in this volume just because of Haruka’s reactions. (Uranus.) Haruka in particular is a lot like Seiya, which makes sense considering they are all guardians but in separate sections of the Milky Way. This volume really makes you want to dream up of all the other guardians and possibilities out there…which brings me to my next point. I LOVE that the guardians are the enemies in the final arc of Sailor Moon. I love reading about how all the “lesser” guardians are jealous and want their own planet. I love the idea of these “protectors” finally snapping and wanting to be the ones that are protected. It adds a flawed dynamic to the series I wish Takeuchi could’ve explored for ten volumes. But alas, we have two. Two great ones. (And one left.) I’m going to cry. Onto the last volume!~SATRecommended to: Sailor Moon fans (must read first 10 to understand this one), but you might enjoy Sailor Moon if you love female superheroes, galaxy-themed villains and mythology, and cheesy romance. This volume in particular also deals with severe denial and delusions.Favorite panel: Seiya and Usagi: “I’m sorry. I didn’t…intend to hurt you…” Not only is it emotionally tense but it’s a moment of awakening for Usagi to face her trauma and fears. It’s the breaking point of the arc.

I'm absolutely thrilled with my 3rd Sailor Moon manga volume! I've been reading scanned bits and pieces people have posted on the Internet for years and I'm so glad to finally be able to read the complete story. I did note some of the problems that others have mentioned, but I'm so glad to be able to read these for myself that I can easily look past it. While it would be so nice to have a perfect version, I am happy with what I've got. These volumes are thick! They are quickly read because there's not a ton of text on the pages but you'll sit and just look at the art after you've read the words. I don't want to put any spoilers in my review so I'll just say that this one picks up right where the last one left off, where the sailors are fighting Queen Beryl. In this volume we meet Chibi Usagi and the Black Moon Clan.I love all the Serenity and Endymion art and was nearly in tears almost through the whole first half. A much more dramatic and satisfying conclusion than the television series in my opinion.About to order Volume 4! I can't wait!

I'm finally getting around to collecting volumes 2-5, and this is where the manga really starts to rock; at least until Chibiusa shows up (I like her but I think that the Black Moon and Infinity arcs are better in the anime). I reread the the first volume after watching Sailor Moon Crystal (which is very good), and while I still loved it I must confess it was definitely not as good as the anime, but this is where the manga really gives the anime a run for its money. The plot never lets up, and it's quite dark at some points. I will admit that I do think it could have more comedy, and at this point the only character we really get to know apart from Usagi and Mamoru is Minako. It's because of those points that I prefer the anime; but this is still an awesome volume that every Moonie should have in their collection.

This is the best volume of Sailor Moon so far. We get to see how the Dead Moon Circus arc should have ended in all its glory. The only negative criticism is that Nehellenia's backstory isn't terribly original. It's just like Maleficent's story in Sleeping Beauty. I must confess I personally thought the anime's version was much better. But apart from that, everything else here is superior to the anime. The Amazoness Quartet are much better here, the Outer Sailors are present & to top it all off Tuxedo Mask actually helps finish off the villain. I think that last point I why I like it so much. I know he did that for the last arc but it's just so much cooler here. Anyways, this is my favorite arc of the manga, apart from the last one. That's right the next 2 volumes are even better. Join me next time when the manga goes out with a bang, not a whimper like the anime did.

"Although the basic physics remains largely unchanged, the Purcell and Morin book has many clarifying discussions based on those experimental results, and most chapters end with current applications and a summary. Solutions to the problems represent roughly one-quarter of the text-they are a most welcome addition, particularly for self-study. (Purcell wrote out a solution manual by hand-mainly for instructors!-to accompany his first edition.) " H. Henry Stroke, New York University for Physics Today

This is the best freshman E&M text of all time -- provided that the class consists of students ready to handle the material at this level. Although the necessary tools of vector calculus are introduced from scratch, I doubt that most students would be able to get up to speed unless they had already had vector calculus or were at least taking it concurrently. The best known innovation of this book was the presentation of magnetism as a consequence of relativity. The book assumes you've already learned special relativity. (There is an appendix on SR in the 3rd edition, but realistically that wouldn't be sufficient.)I ordered a copy of the 3rd edition ($76), and compared it side by side with my disintegrating but much-loved copy of the 1965 1st edition. The price is amazingly reasonable compared to the kind of exploitative prices you see these days for textbooks. One thing I'd never noticed before is that the 1st edition has a notice on its copyright page saying that it's available for royalty-free use after 1970. (It was an NSF-sponsored project.) So theoretically it's legal to scan it and put it on the web for free. However, what I find when I look around on the web is people illegally making the 2nd edition available through sleazy file-sharing sites. The most important change is the switch from cgs to SI units. Three cheers. Without this change the book would have stayed in the ghetto forever. The 3rd edition is almost twice the bulk of the 1st. This is mostly because there are far more problems, and many of them have complete solutions in the back of the book. This is a great new feature. There is also an applications section at the end of every chapter. For the most part, though, it's exactly the same text with only a very few minor changes here and there. The line art is mostly the same. The graphic design isn't as nice as in the 1st edition, which often used gray backgrounds on the figures, with a full bleed. In the 3rd edition, the figures often aren't sufficiently clearly divided from the text, and the effect is extremely ugly.

I would say only this:Provided you have some basis on Special Relativity, this is the best first textbook on Electricity and Magnetism.Surely, after it you will need some other text with a stronger emphasis on mathematics. But the physical knowledge/intuition is build here better than in any other book, thanks to the wonderful/delightful explanations of Edward Purcell. At the undergraduate level is possibly one of the best written books in physics.

I studyed it in my years of university, subsidiarly to Halliday (the main text) and liked very much of Purcell's book. It's more hard that Halliday's and i don't liked of CGS system. But the explanations are good and the problems were interestings, and many times challenging. Now appear a new version, aperfectaly, corrected, MKS system, and with many problens solved and others proposed. The level is from intermedieted to advanced, in betwin Halliday and Reitz (or Griffts), more near Reitz. It is time of review my forty years old knwoledge of eletromagnetism and it will be with Purcell's.

In your introductory EM course, this may seem a bit too much. But after reviewing the subject after you take upper division, you will see that this was actually amazing in detail as it takes from other subjects and combines all relevant information.

This book is very rigorous. The author demonstrates outstanding writing skills; the explanations are very clear and precise. Do your homework on vector calculus. There is hardly no review on the subject. The book jumps head first into vector calc., so if you're rusty on the subject I strongly recommend you review it, or have a calc. textbook at the ready. Sit back and enjoy the ride; this book is amazing.

This book is really an intro to E&M but it is very dense with verbal descriptions of the physics involved. For that reason even though it seems light on equations it is fairly heavy reading. There are plenty of diagrams and interesting situations. Rather than just throw out a few equations and work an example the author goes into great detail in describing the physics of a situation. I think it is a very useful book for that reason. This is not the sort of text you can scan through to find an equation and then plug and chug some numbers. It requires actually reading the chapters to get the gist of what he's saying. It would be better paired with a book heavy on equations and examples and light on verbal descriptions rather than used stand alone. The real gem in the book is the derivation of the magnetic field from Special Relativity. This is something that should be standard in E&M texts but seems to be missing in most of them.

A classic for a reason. This is beautiful book. It is still the best introduction to the subject for anyone who truly wants to understand it. I treasure my copy.

Purcell takes an unconventional approach in this book. Most of the electromagnetics is derived from three laws in this book: Coulomb's law, charge invariance, and special theory of relativity. This approach is especially beautiful and fruitful as the reader can make deep connections between electricity and magnetism. Yet, the book is easy to digest as most of the material is explained over experiments with very useful illustrations. The clarity and precise language with which the material is presented almost qualifies the text for bedtime reading. Finally, each chapter ends with practical applications of the topics covered.

Used this book for the entirety of the trail 2 years ago June. Minimally, you could get away with just this book. Detailed maps can be purchased when you get to the area and they will help with spatial understanding. I didn't make any reservations, traveled solo, and had no problems - even with limited knowledge of French and Italian... thanks to this book... I'll also plug Kev's GR5 trail guide. If your hiking the TMB, you might as well do the GR5 while you are at it.

I have two books for TMB and this one is the better one. The small maps are colorful, and the book itself is small and light and I plan to take it with me when I walk TMB in July 2018. Also, the book gives a main route and an alternate route, and two sections (a) walk anti-clockwise (main) and (b) walk clockwise.

This is the best version available if you're going to hike the TMB. As others have indicated, one does the hike either clockwise or counterclockwise and both are included here....making the book heavier than you'll want for your pack. Suggest, as I did, that you rip out (pull gently) the part of the guide you wont use as well as any other superfluous information that might be interesting to read before you go but you don't need on the trail (e.g. The History of MB). The book is much lighter! Love that the cover is a laminate that looks like it will hold up to weather & grimy hands etc very well.

I did the Tour de Mont Blanc in mid September with essentially no planning or research, I just read this book every night in my tent to plan out the next day. Very helpful with just the right amount of information, in general. I do wish it had some more info on where to camp, and suggestions about which days can be easily combined for trekkers who want to move faster. The book survived getting soaked a few times in icky weather. It's small enough to fit in the pocket of a large jacket but not too tiny to get lost. I frequently referred to this book and observed many other trekkers with their own copy!

Great book and probably the most informative one out there. Wish it included more detailed maps and catered to people who camp along the TMB. This is a GREAT resource for those staying in refuges, but not necessarily for those who are camping and need more ideas of where to camp. Getting a detailed map (25,000:1) is recommended along with this book. Also, there was a section that said to NOT take the main TMB route if there is inclement weather (along an exposed ridge) but it doesn't offer an alternative route. The author does admit this, but it means you have to prepare and look it up before that section. I would also divide the book into two smaller books, or have a way to take out the counterclockwise or clockwise route that you are NOT doing. It's just added weight along the trail to bring both routes. (I ended up cutting out the CCW section since we were doing CW)Overall a great resource and everyone on the TMB had this, but like most things, there can be improvements.

We did the hike in 2013 after reading about the hike in the WSJ. I researched the hike and learned about this guide as well as a web site walkingtheTMB which has individual experiences about doing the hike from people around the world. We studied this guide beforehand and referenced it daily during the hike. It hasn't been updated since 2012 and some information about refuges available may be out of date. Some new ones have been added that we learned about along the way. This book was used by virtually everyone we met who does the walk from all around the world. In fact we met several fellow walkers in restaurants when we saw them refering to the book. If you read this book you do not need to hire a guide or pay a tour company to support you on the trek. If you are reasonably fit and know how to read a map you can do the hike as a self-guided trip. It will be the experience of a lifetime.

Great book, comically understates the actual rigor of the hike. If you are training for the tour mt blanc, do this: find the steepest rocky technical slope you can find and just go up and down it, for hours... and hours. That’s the TMB - but the most stunning hike you will ever do.

Although you can comfortably carry this book in a larger pocket, it contains almost every information you need while doing the Tour de Mont Blanc. This comprehensive guidebook describes the tour in the both clockwise and anti-clockwise directions. The suggested itineraries would suit most hikers. Since the book focuses on the Tour of Mont Blanc itself, it includes only few side trips. If you have time for more side trips, you should complement this book with either a local guidebook in French or a good topographic map.Maps in the book are simple, but useful. I have found them sufficient for most parts of the tour, but they did not help much in few rather confusing places. That is why I sometimes used a real topographic map along with the ones included in the guidebook. Description of trails could be more detailed, but there is an obvious trade-off between the amount of information and the weight of a book. I think the author chose the most practical solution of this trade-off.The book also offers useful information on accommodation. Both brief descriptions of the "refuges" and the phone numbers (or e-mail addresses whenever available) are up to date. Prices are missing, but you will need to call those places in advance anyway because booking is strongly advised on this popular trek. Finally, the book also covers various interesting topics, from weather to ATMs. My only criticism here is that the author had mostly the British readers in mind while writing about flights and health insurance. Since the book has become the most popular guidebook among the English-speaking hikers, I hope the next edition will be slightly more international.I gave this book five stars because it is the most helpful and comprehensive guidebook about the Tour of Mont Blanc I have ever seen. If you try this trek for the first time, "The Tour of Mont Blanc (Mountain Walking)" will make it much easier and more enjoyable. Given that, the price is ridiculously small.

Tumbs up

Super happy with the purchase. The book is like new.

The book came on time and had no markings. Thank you!

As a retired math teacher I wanted a copy of the book my granddaughter was using in 8th grade. I love Merrill algebra books and this information is great.

Good conditions

Wish there was more info on how to do the problems and more answers in the back. In other words, wish the teacher's manual were included with it!

It was what was expected.

This was very helpful for my grandson when he started to get past the point that I could tutor him.

Such a rich, pretty book. Lots and lots of large pictures of many colorful things that will jog your memory of Halloweens you had in your past. Items go way back to the early 1900's in America. It will make a great Baby Boomer gift for a Halloween lover.

beautiful quality photographs of exceptional and rare halloween images. Im not a collector but i bought it for the sheer pleasure of looking at the beautiful images.

This will be a gift for my collector daughter. She will love it. Beautifully illustrated and informative.

Great collections of Halloween

Stuart L. Schneider's dynamic 'Halloween In America: A Collector's Guide With Prices' (1995) spectacularly captures the spirit of the classic years of the American Halloween tradition: the period from the turn of the century through the end of the nineteen-fifties. Though the book includes more recent material, Schneider wisely focuses on what he recognizes to be the holiday's glory days in this country, when its spirit hadn't moved too far from its agricultural roots and American culture was predominantly positive, forward-looking, and uncynical--and its Halloween decorations charming and vividly imaginative. The book opens with three short, loosely-composed essays, "A Brief History Of Halloween," "The Colors And Images Of Halloween," and "Halloween In America." Schneider, who provides no source material, is often broadly correct but specifically wrong. He suggests, for instance, that the Druids may have built Stonehenge when it has been long established that they did not, and that 'Dryad' is another word for 'Druid.'The author also writes a paragraph about witches and "witch conventions" during the Celtic reign of the British Isles as if this were an established historical fact, embellishing his account with images of witches stirring cauldrons, speaking in tongues, dancing around bon fires, and sacrificing animals; if Schneider knows this to be historically factual, then he has access to information the rest of the world doesn't.He also discusses 'Samhain' as a god of the Celtic people who "controlled the dead or non-growing season," when whether or not 'Samhain' was a Celtic deity or even an entity, rather than a season or holiday, is something currently hotly debated among historians, scholars, and Wiccans.Schneider is to be commended for his honesty in addressing some of the more unpleasant aspects of the holiday and its associations head-on, as well as for the wonderful historical scope he provides in placing Halloween origins in a wide, multi-cultural context.Readers will find a rich phantasmagoria of topics discussed in the essays, including the custom of sin eating, All Saints' and All Souls' Days, the belief in the 'veil between worlds' and the return of the dead to their families one the night of the harvest feast, the story of 'Jack of the Lantern,' Snap-Apple and Crack-Nut Nights, apple bobbing, fortune-telling, the Scottish influence on American Halloween traditions, Cabbage and Mischief Nights, the various theories surrounding the origin of trick-or-treating, the meaning of the literal 'scapegoat' and its influence of the appearance of the Christian Devil, the Mexican Day of the Dead, and even mention of the elves, gnomes, boogies, and goblins with which agrarian societies peopled the forests and fields. The gorgeous main portion of the book is dedicated to collectible items and includes sections on Postcards, Decorations, Lanterns, Costumes, Hats and Masks, Noisemakers, Invitations, Games and Toys, Trick Or Treat Bags, and Vegetable People, Figurines and Candy Containers.Halloween In America is by far the best of the books on Halloween collectibles available, and also the best of the Schiffer books on the subject. Many readers will remember these items from their childhood homes, classroom bulletin boards, Five & Dime store shelves and windows, and neighborhood parties. Readers will also be astonished at how the painters, artisans, and creators of these crepe paper, cardboard, composition, glass, and celluloid items were able to envision and capture what we remember and still think of as the very essence of holiday, and in a wide variety of forms: lonely, barren, orange-skied landscapes with setting suns ablaze or yellow rising moons, black cats and owls lurking in pumpkin patches with an anthropomorphic moon overhead, witches flying on broomsticks in formation over dark, isolated houses, skeletons parading in graveyards, etc.Folklorists, sociologists, academics, and artists may have special appreciation for the visionary and sometimes surreal paintings, illustrations, and three-dimensional designs revealed here. One 1908 German postcard portrays a witch, a black cat and a vegetable spirit riding in a car made of a partially hollowed-out watermelon with squash-slice tires; another portrays a red-caped witch riding a immense cob of husked corn like a phallus-conquering Amazon through the stratosphere, with an astonished moon and planet Jupiter looking on; and a third, from 1911, shows children happily bobbing for apples in their warm, cozy home, while a tall, red-skirted, stone-faced witch, accompanied by an owl and a black cat, looks in at the window like the ultimate outsider and a disenfranchised, but still proud and powerful, loner. An entire page is devoted to 1910 postcards of anthropomorphic vegetables riding cars, dancing with or chasing fairies, and joyfully imitating human family practices.Others display Rockwell-like scenes of boys and girls carving pumpkins or trick-or-treating, or elderly women in dimly-lit Victorian mansions being frightened by children's pranks and high jinks.Throughout the book, visionary landscapes and distant horizons beckon; curly-toed elves spring from hollow trees and slide gleefully down rooftops; lone witches warm their hands at their cauldrons under brilliant, star-filled skies; beautiful young ladies sleep fitfully on ruffled pillows while fairies circle their heads; peaked-hat shadows stretch in threateningly at midnight doorways; black cats screech to their own banjo, accordion, violin, and horn playing; and scarecrows extend their arms heavenwards to frighten off their circling opponents.Readers will run for their magnifying and/or reading glasses so that none of the often minute detail will escape their gaze and inspection. 'Halloween In America' is a huge treat, will make collectors and seekers out of most, and hopefully inspire generations to come to celebrate and pass on the traditions recorded here. Highly recommended to holiday lovers, educators, folklorists, Scout leaders, and all lovers of Americana.

This book is perfect if you are collecting vintage Halloween items and want to know approximately the year the items were made and the maker of the items. The photos are very sharp. This is a great coffee table book to have out in the fall. Several people have looked through my copy and remarked it is a wonderful book and remembers some of the items from when they were younger. When I read the previous reviews I had mixed emotions on whether I should get the book. I'm certainly happy that I followed through and purchased it.

A Must-have if you like vintage Halloween!

This is one of my most favorite halloween books. I received it in the shape it was advertised as and the graphics are so gorgeous. Makes me happy that Halloween is my favorite holiday.
