The preview is spot on. I bought this book because I thought I would read it and I do. It's interesting because the element's description is 1-2 pages. It's short enough where you don't feel like you're reading a dull textbook. It's more similar to snippets from from a magazine summary. The colors pop on the pictures and cover. It's a likable and pretty book in person. I bought the hard copy because I saw this book at a store and I knew that I would love having this to flip through the pretty pictures or re-read a page here and there.

My 7 yo son is obsessed with the periodic table. He's memorized it in large part because of this book. While this is clearly meant for an adult audience, I am able to translate the text easily for my son. The pictures are wonderful. It is a great gift for any science lover or enthusiast hoping to learn more about the periodic table.

Love this book! Brought it to work and my fellow chemist immediately went on and ordered one. Big hit. Pictures are cool along with the awesome descriptions and/or history.

section on cars is pretty spot on in terms of selecting the ne plus ultra. boat selections are also pretty decent, though they missed the aquariva.however, the wrist watches in this book are craptastic. A plastic AP royal oak offshore? I guess the target market for this book is lebron james.patek phillippe, a lange % sohne, philippe dufour, not in this book...but should be.

An espresso machine that evokes chrome-plated steampunk falls into the category (but don't let the Pope know I said so), and knives. What could be more manly than knives? Again, the editors emphasize their style without mentioning the remarkable metallurgy resembling Damascus steel. Of course, the listing includes million-dollar watches, helicopter skiing, space flight, and other examples of advanced research and development in conspicuous consumption.I was interested to see that both of this book's editors are women - clearly not the intended audience of these luxury toys. I couldn't help but wonder why it would take women to document men's indulgences. Were they fascinated and baffled by the phenomenon to the point that they had to research it? Or, but being outsiders in the manhood issue, did they bring an outsider's objectivity to the study? My wife suggested that, since men with budgets like these would dangle their toys as bait in the mating game, it's only natural for the targeted women to develop a fine eye for appraisal. Whatever the reason, the book combines bold style with fine execution, as if inspired by the toys it documents.-- wiredweird

My son loves Fly Guy books. They are excellent for beginner readers and keep them entertained and engaged in reading. This is the only one he didn't own, so we purchased it and were not disappointed. He read it three times the day we got it in the mail. I highly recommend this book and the other Fly Guy books for beginner readers!

My five year old son is obsessed with Fly Guy. He also loves the old nursery rhyme that this book is modeled after. I was tickled to see this book for a good price for my kindle. Now we can have a few digital books for when we travel and don't want to carry around bedtime stories.

It's a great book for kids who love the fly guy series and remember the story of There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly.

My soon has read this book every night since we received it.

It fits with other "old Lady" stories and song. 6 yr old grandson thinks it' very funny.

My 6 year old asked specifically for this book after he had seen it at the school library. He is having so much fun reading it! The words and text are easy enough for a beginning reader and the content is much more unique and fun than a lot of other typical beginner books.

We love Fly Guy! My son is 5 and has been reading the Fly Guy books on his own since he was 4. He started reading at 3 and really enjoys these books. They are perfect for early readers.

About the Author

James William (Jim) McMurtray was born in the Mississippi Delta. He worked as a science teacher and planetarium director before serving 20 years as a contractor to NASA's Education Division. During this period he presented lectures and workshops on NASA astronomy and space science missions throughout the United States and in Mexico, Venezuela,and Puerto Rico. 

 In 1984-1985 he was an instructor in NASA's Space Flight Participant Program, conducting seminars for the 114 candidates of the original Teacher in Space Project. In 2004, McMurtray presented testimony to the President's Commission on Implementation of US Space Exploration Policy, (Moon, Mars and Beyond) He is the retired Executive Director of the National Alliance of State Science and Mathematics Coalitions in Washington, DC in 2009 and continued to serve NASSMC as Senior Policy Advisor.

 McMurtray has written six novels. He is also the author of Barbarian Science, a humorous book on science literacy in America, (1999), and Starlight, a nationally distributed planetarium show on the physics of stars (1981). McMurtray still writes and speaks on systems thinking and structural reform in science, technology, and mathematics education. He builds boats -- some that fit in bottles and some that you can sit in. He lives in Virginia with his wife. They have five grown children, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren -- for whom he sometimes makes up bedtime stories.
